Adventure tour El Salvador – sample itinerary
Day 1 arrive San Salvador airport. Your guide will pick you up at the airport and drive to the mountains of the Ruta de Las Flores, famous for its abundance of wild growing flowers. This region has beautiful panoramic views of the mountain side coffee plantations, lagoons and dense cloud forests. You take a look around at the little town of Juayua, colorful decorated with authentic arts and crafts shops. You will spend the night at your chosen accommodation.
Day 2 Today you seek adventure within park Portezuelo with the serene sounds of the cloud forest. You can mountain bike, (bike tour starts at 1900 meters at either Laguna Verde Crater Lake or Cerro Cuyanunsul and takes you on a 23 km downhill ride all the way into the near colonial town of Juayua. The peak is reached on horseback where the bikes and gear await you. Or you can stay on the horse and take an 2,5 hour tour trough the cloud forest. Another option is to hike to nearby natural attractions like the geysers and thermal bath (about 1 – 1,5 hours).
In the afternoon you will experience a marvelous sensation of flying through the skies trough the coffee plantation in the Apaneca region. You will slide down in more than 2000 meters of cable, fourteen platforms suspended from the canopy trees, up to 150 meters per trek. You will spend the night at your chosen accommodation.
Day 3 You take of to the crater lake of Coatepeque. Lake Coatepeque is a beautiful, clean, and sparkling blue crater-shaped lake, 6 kms wide and 120 meters deep and surrounded by steep green slopes of Volcano Izalco and Santa Ana. You will kayak around in the morning and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In the afternoon will go hike to Chorros de Calera, series of impressive waterfalls. Underground river pours of hundreds of fractures in the 3 long cliffs, each about 10 meters high and rang from 30 to 70 meters long. If you are up for it hike the route of the 7 waterfalls which ends at the Chorros de Calera, you will walk in and along the river. You will return to your chosen accommodation.
Day 4 Early in the morning we will go to Barra de Santiago.The ultra-remote Barra de Santiago, on the northern Pacific coast, a national park with estuaries and mangroves
behind a sandbar full of all kinds of birds, iguanas, lizards, marine mammals, shellfish, sea turtles, crocodiles and blue crabs. (July – September) You will see the female sea
turtles wait until it is dark and then slowly walks towards the beach from the ocean. They will dig a nest on the beach and lay their eggs. You will have the opportunity to
learn about and participate in conservation monitoring efforts that are carried out by the beach community (August-December) You will have the option to release baby sea turtles. Sea turtle eggs have been collected and re-nested in incubation hatcheries along El Salvador’s coastline.
Day 5 Being in El Salvador, around world class surf breaks, we will introduce you to surfing with your first surf lesson from a professional surfer. The sandy beaches at the west coast of El Salvador are excellent for beginners to learn to surf. The waves at the inside are not that powerful; Best at high tide. The surf instructors will help you to ride your first waves. You will have the board for the whole day so you can practice. Another night at your chosen accommodation.
Day 6 You take off in the morning to the colonial town of Suchitoto close to the lake Suchitlan. Suchitoto has great colonial houses and church, art galleries and is close to Lake Suchitlan, a former river that was dammed and has an ecosystem that offers much ornithological interest for abundance as well as for the variety of species, pelicans, herons and storks. We will have a historical city tour around all the interesting points in town. Dinner will be at one of the restaurants located at the food of the lake watching the sun go down. Return to your chosen accommodation.
Day 7 Get up early and have some optional activities around Suchitoto. You can go horseback riding to Guazapa with an ex guerilla local guide and see their former combat and campsites, trenches, tattoos and bomb holes. Guazapa was the scenario for multiple bombings and military raids as it was a strategic bastion of the rebels for twelve years and in a repeated attempt by the army to retake the territory. Or you can hike the river Senoras. You will visit the Zacamil hanging bridge, several viewing points, El Cubo waterfall and Los Encuentros swimming hole. At night you have the option to go for a night photo safari, an 2 hour hike where you can find deer, raccoon, armadillo, opossum, skunk, owl, tepezcuintle, cotuza, ect. Night at your chosen accommodation.
Day 8 Today is day off! You can spend the day however you like, walk around town, sit by the lake or go for a swim. Optional you can arrange any of the tours that the hotel. Last night at your chosen accommodation.
Day 9 transportation back to the airport, to be in time for your flight!
