Iceland Trail Running & Hiking Trip

Join this 4 day Iceland trail running adventure and run the most spectacular trails the country. Run 15-25 km each day on mostly soft trails through the Icelandic wilderness, stay overnight in rustic mountain huts and ease your aching muscles soaking in natural hot springs.

This Iceland trail running adventure is filled with glaciers, mud pools, lagoons, mountains and volcanoes. You’ll be running between 15-25 km a day with an experienced Icelandic running guide with time either side of your daily run to explore Iceland’s most spectacular natural wonders.

Run along the largest glacier in Europe, explore the Mt Hekla volcano, run through the brilliant rhyolit mountains in Landmannalaugar, and across Fimmvörðuháls, arguably the single best track in Iceland. Stay in mountain huts as you run from trail to trail and end the adventure relaxing in a geothermal swimming pool to soothe your aching muscles.

The adventure begins in Landmannahellir at the base of the mysterious Mt. Hekla. From day one you’ll experience the fun of Icelandic overnight mountain huts as well as hearty and delicious Icelandic cuisine.  Visit Skaftafell National Park where you’ll see Eldgjá, the largest volcanic canyon in the world,  Ófærufoss, a stunning waterfall at the bottom of the canyon, and the Icelandic Alps.

The adventure ends in the Valley of Thor.  It was carved out by the surrounding three glaciers and has easily climbable mountains and plenty of varied running and hiking trails.

Itinerary

Day 1: Entering the highlands
Pick up at international airport or your hotel/guesthouse in Reykjavík drive
to Landmannahellir. A 4 hours drive from the international airport brings us to the roots of the mysterious Mt. Hekla. After a short visit to the volcano we drive towards our mountain hut in the Icelandic highlands, where we will spend the next couple of nights. Running route of the day brings us around the green and black mountains of the area towards the colorful rhyolit mountains of the Landmannalaugar area. After the run the guide cooks dinner with the help of everyone from Icelandic food and gives you insight in the scandinavian cuisine.

Day 2: Landmannalaugar
This starts with a short drive to the nearby Landmannalaugar. The area is now a popular destination of hikers because of the unique landscape that can be seen there. The landscape is characterized by colorful rhyolit mountains, as well as black lava from the middle ages with traces of obsidian. At today’s run we come across hot springs and mud pools too hot to bathe in, but very beautiful to look at. Our run starts and ends in Landmannalaugar and includes elevation of 1000 meters. After the run we recommend having a bath in the natural hot bath at Landmannalaugar. After the bath we drive to our mountain hut for relaxation.

Day 3: Crater of Eldgjá
We start the day by running to the largest volcanic canyon in the world, Eldgjá. There is a waterfall named Ófærufoss in the bottom of the canyon and both the canyon and the waterfall belong to the Western territory of Vatnajökull National Park. After a visit to Eldgjá we continue to the valley of Þórsmörk where we spend the night.
Running: 20-25 km on soft trails.

Day 4: Þórsmörk (Valley of Thor)

We go for a morning run in Þórsmörk (valley of Thor) where we can get an overview of the valley and the three glaciers that surround the valley. The valley offers many trails to explore and mountains as well. On our way to Reykjavík we stop at the waterfall of Seljalandsfoss waterfall and get to Reykjavík in the afternoon between 4-6 pm.
