Malawi to Victoria Falls

Four awesome East African countries are on offer during this overland Malawi to Victoria Falls South adventure. You’ll spend 12 days overlanding between Dar es Salaam and Victoria Falls including stops in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.

Travelling in an overlanding vehicle is a fantastic way to see Africa, letting you get up close and personal with the landscapes, people and wildlife and is a great option for both solo travellers and groups of friends.

First up on the itinerary is a visit to the highland region of Mikumi National Park. You’ll travel around the Great Rift Valley and learn about the Masai people. In Iringa you’ll visit a tea growing region and along the way there are plenty of opportunities to taste delicious Tanzanian cuisine.

In Malawi you’ll have time to chill out on the beaches while staying with wonderful hosts. You’ll spend three days camping at Lake Malawi – considered to one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes on Earth. Plenty of colourful tropical fish to see as well as the possibility of a full day hike to Livingstonia Mission.

In Zambia you’ll see what are likely to be some of the most spectacular sunsets of your life after full and fun days of game viewing. Camp on the banks of the Luangwa River and hopefully catch a glimpse of hippos coming to water near camp. The park is also known for the great leopard population there.

The adventure ends in Victoria Falls, a spectacular sight and considered to be the largest falls in the world. The falls are over 100m high and can be heard up to 40 km away. The Victoria Falls area offers loads of adrenaline-filled outdoor activities from zip-lining to kayaking that are certainly worth a few extra days tagged on to the end of the trip.



Day 01: Mikumi

Today we leave the humid Indian Ocean coastline and our journey leads us to Mikumi National Park. Mikumi is home to lion, zebra, wildebeest, impala, buffalo and elephant. Today we have the opportunity to enjoy an optional afternoon game drive through the park.

Day 02: Iringa

Today we travel further inland and up to Iringa in the highland tea growing area.

Day 03: Northern Lake Malawi – Malawi

Today we leave Tanzania and enter Malawi. We ascend out of the Great Rift Valley through some spectacular mountain passes, passing vast tea plantations in the highlands before arriving at our camp. As we will be spending the next 3 nights here, you will have sufficient time to explore the area. Lake Malawi is regarded as one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in the world, tropical fish (the colourful kind) swim past in schools of brilliant blues, yellows and purples. It may also be possible to book an excursion to the Livingstonia Mission (full day hike).

Day 04: Northern Lake Malawi

As you have the entire day, make use of your time here enjoy the sights and sounds of Lake Malawi or laze around the pool at our accommodation.

Day 05: Northern Lake Malawi

Make the most of the day and enjoy snorkelling and swimming in Lake Malawi.

Day 06: Central Lake Malawi

Ngala Beach lies on the shore of Lake Malawi and is a town of considerable historical note. Our accommodation for the night is situated on the edge of Lake Malawi and if time permits, grab the snorkels and discover some of the interesting creatures residing in the lake.

Day 07: Zambia – South Luangwa National Park

Early in the morning we drive from Malawi and cross in to Zambia and continue to the South Luangwa National Park where we spend the next two nights right on the banks of the Luangwa River. You can often see hippos and other animals from the camp bar. This afternoon we enjoy an included sunset game drive in the South Luangwa NP.

Day 08: South Luangwa National Park

In the morning you have the opportunity to take another optional game drive. The park is known for its high concentration of leopards and hippos. After lunch we will stop at the community run tribal textile project. The Tribal textile production factory is closed annually from December to March, we will therefore not be able to view the fabric production, however the textile shop is open all year round.

Day 09: Petauke

We leave South Luangwa and drive through to Petuake where we will relax in the afternoon. Zambia is truly Africa, with its lush, sub-tropical vegetation.

Day 10: Lusaka

The journey towards the bustling Zambian capital of Lusaka takes us along an interesting route. On week days there may be the opportunity to visit one of the interesting local markets of the Zambian capital city.

Day 11: Zimbabwe – Victoria Falls

On the last day of the journey we drive from Lusaka, across the Zimbabwean border into Victoria Falls. Although your tour ends here we do recommend that you spend another 1 to 2 nights in this area to experience Victoria Falls and many exciting adrenaline activities here.

Adventure Truck


The African sun is very strong. Please use a factor 30 sunscreen and wear a hat. You should drink at least 3 litres of water per day to avoid dehydration. It can also get very cold during winter months on this route. Please see Pre Departure Booklet for detailed information.

Insurance (Compulsory)

All clients require adequate Medical Travel Insurance. Activity providers can refuse participation of activities, if the correct valid Medical Insurance is not provided.

Currency and Banking

As your tour may pass through multiple countries, we have prepared information on the use of local and foreign currencies, ATMs and Credit Cards for each country.


Please inform us of any pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or asthma and any prescription medicine you may be taking. We also need to know about any food allergies or physical disabilities that you may have.


A Yellow Fever Certificate is required for visiting certain areas in Morocco that are affected by Yellow Fever. Please see the Pre-Departure Information booklet for detailed information on vaccinations in Africa. A Yellow Fever Certificate might be required for this tour depending on your nationality.


As visa requirements vary considerably from country to country and nationality to nationality, please contact the various embassies or a visa service agent in your home country to re-check your visa requirements at least 4 weeks prior to travelling. Please note that visas are the responsibility of the traveller and that the trip operator will not be held responsible for guests being denied entry should they not be in the possession of the relevant visas.
