Morocco Surf and Yoga Trip

Spend nine days exploring colourful and vibrant Morocco on this small group trip thats perfect for solo travellers or small groups of friends.

Discover ancient treasures and modern day delights in Marrakech, hike in the beautiful Atlas Mountains, camp out under star-filled skies, take a camel ride through the desert and relax with a traditional hammam spa experience. This fantastic get-away finishes with an invigorating 3 night yoga and surf retreat on the spectacular coastline of Taghazout.

  • Stay in a traditional Riad right in the heart of Marrakech’s medina
  • Discover the delightful and traditional Berber culture
  • Guided full day hike in the Atlas Mountains
  • Take surf lessons and practice yoga on the beach
  • Goats in trees. Yes, it’s a thing.
  • Visit Toubkal National Park and the Berber village of Imlil inside its borders

After you settle into your lovely Riad in Marrakech, the adventure begins. The Medina is a living breathing thing and it’s impossible not to get lost as one alleyway leads to another and another. A guide will take you to the gardens, souks, and other sights that make Marrakech what it is.

From Marrakech, you’ll travel up into the mountains of the High Atlas to hike in Toubkal National Park and stay in a traditional guest house. An experienced (and fantastic) guide will lead you on a trek to Tacheddiirt Pass.  This is the highest ski resort in Northern Africa.  Along the way, you’ll pass small villages and valleys filled with olive groves. Before you leave the mountains enjoy a lunch prepared in traditional shepherd huts.

After leaving the mountain peaks, you and the group will head down to the gorgeous plains of the Agafay Desert.  This is where you’ll glamp for one night under the stars in your oriental inspired tents.  Inside your tent, you’ll enjoy a space with plush Berber rugs, glowing lantern light, and local handicrafts.  Before tucking in for the night, take a sunset camel ride across the desert. With Mt Toubkal as your backdrop, this is the perfect place to spend an evening.

Once you’ve soaked up the views and fresh air it’s time to hit the beach at Taghazout and Essaouria to try surfing and relaxing with an afternoon yoga class. Essaouria lies along the coastline and offers some of the most quintessential Moroccan experiences.  Both Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix frequented this beachside town. Visit the filming location for the television show Game of Thrones, take in a live show in the evening, and take a walking tour through the winding and exotic medina.

This small group adventure is perfect for solo travellers and small groups in their 30’s and 40’s.  Combining a backpacking spirit with the style of a jet-setter this is a chance to experience a fascinating blend of Berber, Arab, African, and European cultures.

Day 1: The mayhem of Marrakech

They say the best way to learn is to dive into the deep end. Well, in Marrakech you’ll immediately be immersed in the spirit and magic of Morocco. A UNESCO Heritage Culture Centre in the heart of the city, the iconic Djemaa el Fna square is alive with snake charmers and their undulating cobras, magicians, acrobats, monkeys and hundreds of fabric and jewellery boutiques. If you want to adjust more slowly, retreat to your stylish riad accommodation in the heart of the Medina. You’ll then step out with our expert guide and be led on a Medina food tour through the maze of souks, gardens and food stalls piled high with enticing fresh spices. Them with all the smells and spices wafting through the air, enjoy dinner at a local food stall where you’ll watch the chefs cooking up a storm right in front of you.

Day 2: Souvenirs, spas & sipping tea with a view

You’ll have the chance to explore Marrakech this morning and if you have an eye on buying a souvenir, this is the best time to bag a bargain because *TOP TIP ALERT* many vendors are more open to haggling with their first customer of the day. It’s then time to enjoy a blissful spa experience at Les Bains de Marrakech, one of the city’s first (and best) private Hammams, complete with homemade beauty products and scattered flower petals. This afternoon we’re leaving Marrakech behind and heading to the mountains of High Atlas. Far from touristy resorts, few make the effort to see what is one of the most beautiful regions of the country. Here we’re staying in the small, rural village of Imlil, home to indigenous Berbers. De-stress in a traditional guest house and enjoy fresh mint tea on its rooftop terrace.

Day 3: Explore North Africa’s highest mountains

After breakfast, breathe in the clear mountain air and prepare for an amazing day of hiking. We’re exploring Toubkal National Park, where the impressive Jebel Toubkal stands strong as the highest peak in Morocco. Your experienced mountain guide will lead the way, starting at the wild and remote Mizik Pass before a steady hike through juniper forests up to spectacular views across this Berber homeland. You’ll reach the Tacheddirt Pass, the highest ski resort in North Africa, and take in local village life along picturesque olive grove valleys. Lunch will be freshly prepared for you in the shepherd huts of Azib Tamsoult, before heading back to Imlil via the scenic villages of Tizi Oussem and Aid Aissa. Feeling pleasantly hiked out, the rest of the afternoon is yours to relax after an idyllic day to remember. Dinner is served at your authentic guest house, mountain views and all.

Day 4: Desert glamping and sunset camel rides

Today we’re heading from the mountain heights to the vast plains of Agafay Desert. Step into a film set style location where oriental-inspired tents are dotted across the desert with Mt Toubkal towering in the distance. These stylish glamping tents will be your home for the night, where you’ll relax in spacious interiors filled with glowing lanterns, Berber rugs and local crafted artwork. Your guide will take you on a short walk to explore the local area, yet the best, most authentic way to admire your desert surroundings is a sunset camel ride. What else? So with your face aglow from the last rays of the setting sun, enjoy a bucket list ticking camel ride over the rolling hills of Agafay Desert.

Day 5: Escape to Essaouira

From the mountains to the desert, next up: the coast. After breakfast at your magical glampsite, there’s a 3 hour drive to the picturesque fishing town of Essaouira. Sitting pretty on the south west coastline of Morocco, here you’ll find amazing wood carvings, a beautiful whitewashed medina and an awesome beach to the south. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour through the winding streets of this Game of Thrones filming location, before hitting up the live music scene. Formerly a favourite hangout of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, this is a great place for you to let your hair down.

Day 6: The surfing paradise of Taghazout

Spend the morning relaxing, exploring, shopping or doing whatever you fancy in Essaouira. This afternoon we’ll be leaving behind this coastal city, yet we’re still ocean bound and heading for the waves. The surfing paradise of Taghazout awaits, so say goodbye to your guide as the only advise you’ll be needing now is from your surf and yoga instructors. You’re staying in Amouage where the powerful Atlantic waves and laidback atmosphere makes it the ultimate surf and yoga retreat. There’s a handful of great surf sites with a range of different breaks, so it caters for both advanced and beginner surfers. Check into your oceanfront hotel, check out the sea views from your room and explore all this retreat has to offer. With a spa, infinity pool and incredible restaurant on your doorstep, enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers knowing the next 3 nights will be spent in oceanfront luxury.

Day 7: Grab your surf board and yoga mat

Wake up to uninterrupted views across the ocean and enjoy breakfast in your sunny surroundings. Today kicks off with a 2 hour morning surfing lesson, catering for both beginners and expert wave riders. With excellent instructors giving you individual attention to pinpoint your surfing needs, get to know your ‘ground swell’ from your ‘sandbar’. And when ‘noodle arms’ set in, kick back on the beach or relax by the infinity pool before your afternoon yoga lesson. Here you’ll watch the rippling waves wash up on the shore as you stretch out and relax. Then it’s time for another delicious dinner with your fellow yoga lovin’ surfers.

Day 8: Life’s a beach in Amouage

Rise and shine to yet more ocean views from your room with a view. After breakfast, your surf retreat continues with a morning lesson on the deep blue waves. Your excellent instructor will coach you on your technique, so you’ll be confidently riding the waves in no time. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to jump back on your board to practice what you’ve learned. Or the infinity pool may have your name on, tough choice. This evening is your last night in this enchanting country, so enjoy a delicious farewell dinner and hit the bar with your fellow travellers… the packing can wait.

Day 9: To infinity pool and beyond

You’ve had the holiday of a lifetime and can now return home with your batteries recharged and an authentic insight into one of the most mesmerising countries on Earth. Once you’ve packed up and booked your taxi to the airport, it’s time to spiral away into the skies with a huge bank of captivating memories that will stay with you long after you land.
