Winter Running Iceland

Volcanos and glaciers are just some of the natural wonders of Iceland you’ll discover on this luxury 4 day winter running Iceland trip.

The packed itinerary includes the unmissable sights of the Golden Circle, some of Iceland’s largest and most impressive waterfalls, the stunning Þórsmörk mountain ridge, Vatnajökull glacier National Park, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.

Running with some of Iceland’s most notable and expert runners you’ll get to see Iceland’s stunning landscape from a different perspective than your average traveller, down into untouched canyons or up mountain tops to get the best views of the diverse and awe-inspiring landscape.

Accommodation is at 3-4 star hotels and includes a flight back from Höfn to the capital with magnificent view over the island on clear days.

Itinerary

Day 1: Golden Circle

Departure from hotel in Reykjavík at 8:30. We head to our first stop at the rift valley Þingvellir (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with it ́s rich history, were the American and Euroasian tectonic plates meet.

Next stop is Geysir were the active geyser Strokkur will entertain you every 4 – 8 minute with eruption 15 – 40 meters / 50 – 130 ft high. Close by is the spectacular and powerful Gullfoss. From here we head to our accommodation at Hotel Rangá.

Day 2: Þórsmörk

We head from Hotel Rangá to Seljalandsfoss, a unique 60 meter high waterfall that we will walk behind. We continue our drive to the valley of Thorsmork, a green oasis surrounded by three glaciers. We go for a hike in the valley towards a waterfall and enjoy the magical atmosphere the area has to offer.

On our way back to the main road we stop at Skógafoss waterfall, 25 m / 82 ft width and one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. We head from Skógar to our accommodation in Vík, a lovely town famous for it’s wide black beach and Dyrhólaey peninsula with Puffins colony.

Day 3: Vík – Vatnajökull National Park

On our way to Skaftafell Park we stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur, a beautiful canyon with up to 100 m / 328 ft deep sheer walls covered with palagonite bedrock and vibrant green mosses and vegetation. Next stop is Skaftafell Park a green pearl at the roots ofVatnajökull. At Skaftafell mountain heath we visit the black waterfall Svartifoss with it’s dark basalt columns.

We hike a bit further up the moor to get a view over Skaftafell Park with excellent view over the stunning area of Skaftafell, Vatnajökull, glacier rivers and black sand desert. Accomodation at Freysnes is located few km from Skaftafell Park and Vatnajökull.

Day 4: Skaftafell – Höfn

The day will be spent in close distance to the mighty glacier Vatnajökull. We head to the glacier lake Fjallsárlón, a hidden treasure close to the more famous lagoon Jökulsárlón. Fjallsárlón with Öræfajökull, Icelands tallenst volcano, in the background and drifting icebergs in the river is a breathtaking sight. We explore this phenomenal wasteland at the roots of Vatnajökull by Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.

Jökulsárlón lagoon is one of the naturals wonders of Iceland with icebergs braking of the glacier, drifting in the lagoon and into the Atlantic Ocean. The tour ends with a flight from the town Höfn to Reykjavík (at 18:45 – 19:45) and don’t forget to enjoy the view on the flight back to Reykjavík.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we run the whole time during the tour? No. We do stop by interesting places along the way, so please bring your camera!

How can I know this tour is suitable for me? Difficulty level varies between tours. All of our tours in Iceland and Faroe Islands are completely or partially on trail so some experience with trail running is always required. All of our tours in Greenland are technically difficult and only suitable for experienced runners.

How many guides are there on this tour? Depending on the pace of each individual and how the group is put together if there will be one or two guides.

How far in advance do I need to book? Some of our tours tend to fill up around March but booking is confirmed with payment of 20% confirmation fee.

How many people are on each tour? This depends on each tour but most of the time there are around 4 – 10 people on each tour.

What is the accommodation like? We offer tours with accommodation in huts and other tours with accommodation in hotels. In the hotels there are single, double or twin rooms with bathrooms in 3-4 start hotels. In the mountain huts everybody is in one big room.
