Explore the Big Blue
Original post: Another World Adventures
June 8th is World Oceans Day – a day we truly love.
On World Oceans Day people around the planet celebrate and honor the body of water which links us all.
For Tori and I this has meaning for many different reasons.
It was the magnificent Atlantic Ocean that bought us together in 2011 as we crossed under sail on the Bark Europa’s Centennial celebration crossing. And for many years before, and still now, I work on campaigns to combat illegal fishing and its pressures on our fragile marine environment.
Around the daunting task of bringing Another World Adventures to life, Tori continues to work supporting businesses committed to cutting their carbon emissions. Climate change is without question one of the greatest threats to our oceans and those who depend on them for their lives, livelihoods or, well, just mad adventures.
Inspired by the majesty of the ‘Big Blue’ – here’s some trips that celebrate World Oceans Day … throughout the year.
“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide
Extreme Sail Adventure – Nova Scotia, Canada to Bermuda
October 5th – 18th 2013
Set sail on a fast, wet and rough passage under the expert tutelage of our highly experienced captain. This trip is on board our favourite conservation sail vessel “Sea Dragon”. Over the past 2 years Sea Dragon has sailed a staggering 50,000 miles across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans carrying out important research on the state of the marine environment.
“For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), It’s always our self we find in the sea.” – E.E. Cummings
Shark Dive – Durban, South Africa
Departures in Nov ’13 / Jan – March ’14 – 7 days
Hang in the big blue with a group of divers for a shark encounter to remember forever off the bustling city of Durban, South Africa home to the famous dolphin coast and some of the world’s best Apex Predator shark diving. Collect Sand Tiger Shark teeth and explore caves, swim-throughs and tunnels. Brave up for a baited dive at Protea Banks and hang in the blue whilst possible Tiger, Bull, Hammerhead and Oceanic Black-Tip sharks come in to investigate the scent trail around you. Take part in a conservation talk, and learn about the sharks, the threats to them and the work that our donation will be helping towards.
“It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose, should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist: the threat is rather to life itself.” – Rachel Carson
Adventure El Salvador
Nov ’13 – March ’14 / tailored itineraries for individuals and groups
El Salvador is the smallest country of Central America and has a wide variety of activities to offer and all within a maximum of a 3 hours drive. Landscape full of broad valleys, sudden volcanoes and black-sand beaches, perfect for activities like rafting, hiking, diving, mountain biking and SURFING.
National Geographic Adventure Issue reports that “After two earthquakes and twelve years of civil war, El Salvador is shaking off its rough image and re-emerging as a world-class surfing spot.”
“Hark, now hear the sailors cry / smell the sea, and feel the sky / let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic.” -Van Morrison
Antarctica Tall Ship Experience
Dept Dec 29th or Jan 23rd for 3 weeks each
This is an exceptionally unique way to see one of the world’s travel frontiers. Antarctica is at the heart of many of the greatest adventure stories, and a visit by tall ship where you make up the guest crew (no experience needed) is without doubt the most exciting way to explore this great continent.
In Antarctic waters you’ll be overwhelmed by the vast numbers and closeness you’ll get to glaciers, mosses and lichens, seals, birds and penguins at sea and during beach landings. Expect to spot all different kinds of whales, the most loyal visitors of the Southern Ocean.
