UN World Day International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Original post: Another World Adventures
11th February 2016 – Today is UN World Day International Day of Women and Girls in Science so we turn to some exciting science at sea adventures for women.
In November 2015 a voyage across the Atlantic on board a 72ft expedition yacht crewed only by women set sail from Senegal, West Africa to the shores of Recife in Brazil. The aim of this all women’s voyage was to ‘make the unseen seen, from the toxics in our bodies to the toxics in our seas’.
The voyage was made up of a group of women from all walks of life who applied amidst a lot of competition to undertake this scientific research mission exploring the world’s oceans while creating inspiring narratives of female leadership and personal and environmental exploration.
The Mission
The mission of the voyage was to explore the issue of plastics, chemicals, endocrine disruptors and carcinogens in our personal and global environment that can cause disease. The aim was to engage women in scientific narratives relating to the consumer choices they make, and their long-term health impacts on themselves and our environment.
Words from a female sailor on board
It was a hugely successful voyage with one of the team-mates who discovered the voyage via the Another World Adventures website writing to us to say:
“There are no words. I just really don’t know what to say. It is so trite to say it was the experience of a lifetime, but it was. It was a 72′ Petri dish. Thirteen women I had never laid eyes on, jobs I didn’t know existed and water as far as the eye could see. I loved it. I loved the routine. I loved being 99% disconnected. I loved the young women. I loved the science. I loved being part of a team within a team. I loved “watch”. It was amazing, it was an experience I will be grateful of for the rest of my life. I won’t forget it, thank you for asking. And thank you for your part in my magic.
Best Regards, Heather”
