Atlantic Crossing – Cape Verde to Brazil

Duration: 14 days
View Dates

From the sunshine of Cape Verde to the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha. Cross the equator and experience the thrill of sailing an ocean on board a traditional tall ship!

This Atlantic adventure begins in Cape Verde. The archipelago receives very little rain, and this is especially evident on the island of São Vicente where your journey starts. The dry volcanic landscape closely resembles a lunar scene. However, port city, Mindelo is vibrant and colorful, and its people are warm and welcoming. A common location for ships to stock up before crossing to South America. You’ll be following sailing history.  Once you join the ship – your adventure has begun!

The wind is particularly strong in the channel between São Vicente and Santo Antão, allowing you to leave these islands behind quickly. After a day at sea, you will pass close to Ilha Brava, and if the visibility is good, you may also see the towering volcano of Fogo in the background. The temptation to stop is great, but with an Atlantic crossing ahead of you, you must settle for the view alone.
As the journey progresses, you will learn more and more about sailing a brig, navigating, meteorology, and ship maintenance through hands-on experience. With plenty of time for wildlife watching, there is a high chance of spotting whales, and even farther from shore, seabirds will continue to accompany you. With some luck, you may also see schools of flying fish pursued by mahi-mahi and tuna, as well as dolphins or even sunfish.
Halfway through the crossing, you will visit the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago: a group of rocks formed by seabed uplift rather than volcanic activity. The ocean floor here is more than three kilometers deep.

During this voyage, you will cross the equator—a milestone for every sailor. Naturally, you will also have to seek permission from Neptune to sail into the Southern Hemisphere. All “landlubbers” crossing the equator for the first time should prepare for a proper initiation by the King of the Sea!

From there the journey will accelerate. Picking up the southeast trade winds for the final days of sailing toward Fernando de Noronha. This Brazilian archipelago is known for its historic ruins, stunning beaches, and unique nature, featuring tropical seabirds and rich marine life. It is a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

Sailing on a large square rigged sailing ship is a special experience. Especially on an ocean-going voyage like this one.  You will be assigned to a watch together with the crew and receive instruction so that you can actively help sail, steer and navigate the ship. Conditions at sea are changeable and on a sailing ship the natural elements have to be constantly taken into account. The professional crew will be on hand to ensure your safety and teach you everything you need to know. Sailing experience is not required but an appetite for adventure is a must!

Tour operator

For over 30 years, this operator has been creating incredible tall ship voyages, enjoyed by new and experienced sailors alike. Most recently they completed a historic two-year expedition in the wake of Charles Darwin called Darwin200.

The aim of their voyages is to have a hands-on, active experience, immersing yourself into life at sea, the rhythm of sailing and the culture of the regions you travel between.

Based out of the Netherlands they have two ships and work with a third providing sailing experiences around the world.

Their Three-masted topsail schooner

The last remaining representative of the large fleet of schooners that sailed under the Dutch flag at the beginning of the 20th century.

The ship is furnished comfortably and supplied with all modern conveniences.  All the cabins are fitted with a washbasin with hot and cold running water and there are separate sets of showers. In the spacious and stylishly appointed salon there are reading tables, seating areas and a piano. Life on board is made even better by delicious meals prepared by a professional chef to fuel you up for a day’s sailing.

It is one of the world’s finest, fully restored historic tall ships and the largest sailing vessel ever to be restored in the Netherlands. She is registered by the Dutch Government as a monument of great cultural and historical value. The ship is one of the oldest and most authentic ships in the international fleet of Tall Ships.

Over the past 30 years she has welcomed thousands of sailors and adventure seekers on board including royalty, politicians, presidents and pop stars, even once hosting a birthday party for Sir Tom Jones!

The first Dutch commercial tall ship to sail to both the north and south poles and successfully tackle the infamous Cape Horn.

Their Two-mast clipper-brig

Built in 1919 and thoroughly stripped and rebuilt to modern standards in 1983. The tall-boat brig style was developed by the Americas during the war of independence to evade the much heavier English Man o' War. As such, the ship combines traditional design with fast speed. Since 2008, she has operated as a sail training vessel, undertaking her regular Atlantic circuit through the Canaries, Cape Verde and the Caribbean.

Below deck there is a spacious saloon which is the heart of the ship and each cabin has a basin with hot and cold running water. Showers and toilets are separate – outside the cabin.
