China Expedition – Great Wall Marathon

Duration: 9 days
From: £1,105.00

Run around China on a marathon expedition from the Great Wall to Beijing and Shanghai.

Looking for a new running challenge? This is an epic marathon adventure that takes you from the Great Wall of China to Beijing and Shanghai. Meet your running goals running a full, half or 10km on a course that runs along the Great Wall and then take in some of the best of China’s sights  as you explore the history and culture of beautiful Beijing and stunning Shanghai.

The adventure begins in Beijing – truly one of the most intriguing cities on Earth. Visit the Temple of Heaven, Panjiayuan Market, Summer Palace, Nanluoguxiang Street, or Houhai Lake while you’re there. For the true adventurers try scorpion on a stick at the night market.

You’ll leave the city and head to the Great Wall as well as some country air and home cooked food before the run. There will be plenty of time to learn about the history of this 6,000 kilometre wall. But on marathon day, your focus will be on a smaller stretch! You’ll run on tarred roads, the wall itself, and narrow rocky paths that run beside the wall and through the surrounding countryside. You’ll be fully supported with water and snack stops along the way. An emergency response team is also on hand to help with anything that might come up during the run. It’s a challenging run, but you’ll love every unforgettable moment.

Back in Beijing you’ll be able to explore Tian’anmen Square, Mao’s Mausoleum, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, the Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum. There is a lot of history and you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the Imperial Chinese courts of the Ming and Qing dynasties. When you’re done sightseeing try a much needed and very relaxing reflexology foot massage.

The tour wraps up with visits to Xi’an and the incredible terracotta warriors and plenty of time to explore the sights in Shanghai. Check out Yuyuan Gardens, Huaihai Road for shopping and great food, and the neighbourhood known as the “Paris of the East.”

If you’re looking to spice up your running routine and discover an incredible country at the same time, this Great Wall Marathon adventure is just what you’ve been looking for. Enquire today to learn more.

The marathon route covers three types of terrain: tarmac roads, a ten-kilometre stretch along the Great Wall itself, and mountain trails through the countryside. The section along the Wall is challenging, with steep ups and downs and loose bricks, while the steep gravel trails can get very slippery.

Is the cost of the Marathon included?

Marathon costs are priced separately from the trip cost to give our travellers the choice of one of the following options:

  • Full Marathon: $200.00 USD
  • Half Marathon: $200.00 USD
  • 10km: $160.00 USD
  • (Prices reflect 2017 costs and are subject to change for 2018)
Any packing tips for the China Marathon?

Previous participants highly recommended that you bring a pair of trekking poles for the marathon itself.
