Ocean mist that permeates the air of quaint colonial towns, the smell of freshly grilled seafood along scenic waterfront boardwalks, and picture-perfect lighthouses perched on rocky outposts – Canada’s Maritimes are like nowhere else in the world.

This 15-day expedition takes you to some of the east coast’s most charming towns, best attractions and incredible parks.

Cruise the Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park, traverse the scenic Cabot Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands, see the unusual formations of Hopewell Rocks at different stages of the tide, and visit some of the oldest towns in North America. Add a hearty dose of quaint Atlantic charm for an outdoor adventure that will stay with you long after you’ve left Canada’s beautiful Atlantic provinces.

Why you'll love this adventure

  • Enjoy a local brew at Alexander Keith’s on Halifax’s atmospheric waterfront, learn the unusual aviation history of Gander, and spend time in one of the oldest cities in North America – St John’s.
  • Cruise the Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland’s World Heritage-listed Gros Morne National Park, then Take in jaw-dropping views of steep cliffs and deep river canyons in the Cape Breton Highlands.
  • Explore the serene landscapes that beloved author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, called home and inspired her classic novel – Anne of Green Gables.
  • Discover the ever-changing Hopewell Rocks in the Bay of Fundy. During low tide, you can walk among the ‘flowerpot’ rock formations carved by tidal erosion, and at high tide, it’s possible to see whales from the shore!
  • The picturesque crayon-coloured wood houses of Lunenburg not only make the Old Town the best surviving example of a British colonial town in North America, it makes it incredibly photogenic.

Accommodation notes

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.

Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we’re arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn’t always possible which means we won’t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.

ACCOMMODATION IN CANADA
Canada is becoming increasingly popular, and this increase in visitors is putting a lot of pressure on accommodation. National Park towns such as Jasper and Banff are unable to build more hotels due to building regulations aimed at protecting the ambience of the parks. As a result, accommodation is getting more expensive each year, and although we contract a long way in advance, it is also getting increasingly difficult to secure bookings. At times it can be difficult to strike a balance between price, location and quality and we sometimes have to sacrifice one for the others. There may be times when your hotel is a little bit out from the centre of town. At other times it may be a little bit more simple than what you are expecting on a Comfort trip. Your accommodation should still be clean and comfortable however, and if you are located slightly out of town, your leader will assist in shuttling you back and forth.

Food and dietary requirements

While travelling with us you’ll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company.

Who is this trip for?

Is this trip right for you

You’ll be spending a lot of time in a van with other travellers. Free space is limited, especially if the group is full. This is all part of the adventure though and you might even make some long-term friends.

The weather can be unpredictable in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. We advise wearing layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day. At night the temperature can really drop, so make sure you have warm clothing with you.

Transport notes

FLEET
Our large fleet of vans are fully equipped with dual air-conditioning system, V8 engines and any camping or cooking equipment needed for your trip. Most have cloth-upholstered seats and carpeted interior with radio/tape or CD players. Your baggage is transported in a trailer which is towed behind the van.

The vans are regularly serviced in our own maintenance facility and continuously checked and serviced by a well established network of maintenance and service facilities throughout the continent. However, unforeseen maintenance problems can still occur while on the road and we appreciate the patience of our travellers as we make necessary repairs as quickly as possible.

DRIVING TIMES
All driving times mentioned in our itinerary are intended as a guide only and represent an estimated driving time – not including lunch stops, fuel stops, photo stops, traffic congestion, adverse weather conditions or any last minute alterations to the itinerary for any unforeseen circumstances. Please note that there are some long driving days on this tour – we’ll have some starts as early as 7am and late arrivals at our final destination, sometimes after dark). As always, your group leader will make stops for viewpoints, short walks and lunch/rest breaks to help break up the journey.

We recommend you are fully prepared for these long travel days by reviewing our notes and indicated drive times. Some travellers prefer to bring pillows on board for added comfort, others prefer reading material or games and puzzles. The reality is that to get from one fabulous location to another, the distances are great and we like to think at least some of the adventure is in the journey – not just the destination. You’ll be on board with up to 12 other passengers plus your group leader so patience and cooperation goes a long way in making this journey a comfortable one.

SEAT BELT POLICY
Safety is our priority and therefore our travellers are asked to sign a document on Day 1 of the itinerary indicating your understanding of our seat belt policy.

Health

Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group – patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone’s travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don’t keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well – this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

SOLO TRAVELLERS
This is the beauty of our style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

As a solo traveller, you will be paired up with another traveller of the same gender as per your passport information. Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre-trip and post-trip accommodation booked through us will on a single room basis.

If you’re not comfortable sharing a room with someone of the same gender, you also have the choice to pay for a single supplement (available on the majority of our trips).

If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly.

Some of our itineraries have accommodation booked on an open gender, multi-share basis and where applicable this will be specified in our Essential Trip Information.

Tour operator

We love this operator for the freedom and flexibility they give travellers to get off the tourist trails and really experience local cultures. Their style of small group travel is perfect for solo travellers, couples or small groups of friends and their grassroots style of travel seeks to have a positive impact on the communities they visit.

They use local leaders, local accommodation & transport and support local community projects, ensuring sustainability is at the centre of everything they do.

In addition, they expect their staff and travellers to demonstrate the principles of responsible travel – respecting people, cultures and local environments; in the distribution of wealth; in good will and cross-cultural sharing; and in contributing to sustainable development.
