Highlights of the classic Pyrenean hiking trail
Trek the classic Pyrenean hiking trail over the course of ten days. Called the GR10, the trail runs the length of the Pyrenees and is considered one of Europe’s classic hikes. Grande Randonee means ‘big walk’ in French and it is well named. You’ll walk along the French and Spanish border between the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and take in a wide variety of landscapes and vistas.
The operator has picked the best sections between Gavarnie and Bagneres de Luchon. It’s simply stunning and you won’t soon forget the culture of the many Pyrenean villages you visit along the way.
There are six full days of point to point walking with a nice loop in the beginning that will help you acclimatise. Each day is a long day of trekking with ascents that average about 900 metres. The paths are well maintained but you should be prepared for some rough spots.
To fully enjoy yourself it’s important that you feel confident in your hiking skills and be at a moderate level of fitness. Accommodation is in simple mountain huts and the cuisine is the best of what the French mountain culture has to offer.

Our first walk will be in Gavarnie horseshoe and up to the Espuguette hut from where we will be able to take in some incredible views of the surrounding area. This is the perfect walk to begin with, allowing us to warm up before we start the more challenging point-to-point walking that will make up the remainder of our itinerary. In the morning we take a short transfer to the GR10 into the valley of the Aygues Cluses stream and then to the Col de Madamete (2509m) before entering the stunning Néouvielle National Nature Reserve. In the nature reserve we will pass by many beautiful lakes such as the Madamete and Aumar lakes before descending to L'Oule hut, our accommodation for this evening./As L'Oule refuge is not accessible by road, you will not have access to your main luggage on this night. We begin our day with a climb to the Col Du Portet (2215m). Mountain biking and road cycling is also available nearby where it is possible to cycle one of the cols of the Tour de France. In addition to this there are many museums, bars and restaurants in Saint Lary. Please note that options may be limited at the start and end of the summer as some shops and attractions only open when the summer season is in progress. *Hotel Pons or similar*.

This Trip is Suitable For
This trip involves 6 full days of point-to-point walking as well as a loop walk at the start of the trip to help you acclimatise. The walks are generally quite long and involve ascents of 500-1200m (average approximately 900m) but descents will typically be less (average approximately 700m). Although the paths are well maintained, there are sections that are rough underfoot. At times the terrain can be rocky with loose scree and some scrambling will be necessary. As this is a group holiday you need to be confident that your fitness will allow you to enjoyably walk at a consistent and steady pace that matches the group average, therefore allowing the group to finish the day at a reasonable time. You will also enjoy the trek a great deal more if your fitness allows you to walk the route with relative ease.
This adventure can also be booked with UK return flights by the operator – to get prices, dates and availability for the flight option please complete an enquiry form today and mention your flight interest in the message section. Thanks!

If you’re looking for a company with experience you can’t beat these guys. This operator started life in February 1974 when two friends got together to provide an overland truck to travel to the Minaret of Jam, deep in the heart of the Hindu Kush, the most inaccessible of the world’s great monuments.
For the company, and people who work for them “it’s all about adventure” which is what they were founded on and what they are still about today. Their trips take place all around the world where they help travelers to delve into local traditions, cultures, cuisine, lifestyles – anything that contributes to a country’ unique identity.
We love that their groups and guides travel courteously and respectfully, in smaller groups to minimise the impact, to ensure that every holiday is a beneficial experience for everyone involved.
