Who is this trip for?
AGE & EXPERIENCE
These adventure sailing holidays are open to everyone aged 18 years and over, with a minimum of a RYA day skipper (ASA 104 or above) or experience of 4 weeks of sailing in the last 5 years.
You also need to provide a medical declaration and be fit to sail (see below) to ensure before booking
This is just to make as certain as possible that you will be okay out on the water.
The company is committed to helping as many people as possible have an amazing sailing holiday and experience the magic of the sea. The skippers and mates have medical training and the boats have some medical supplies and equipment on board. However, the reality is that once onboard access to professional medical assistance is going to be slower than if you were on land. If you are offshore it may be some days. For this reason, we ask you to check through the medical disclosure form below before you contact the operator to book.
If you answer yes to any of the questions, you should speak to the operator before you book online. It will probably still be fine but it’s good to make sure. You will be asked to submit the form electronically 14 days before the start date, ensuring that we have the most up to date information.
FITNESS TO SAIL
We believe that as many people as possible should be able to head out to sea and have a great adventure. However, it is essential for everyone’s safety that you are in a fit enough state to be on board. Ability to complete the five exercises is a pre-requisite for joining as a crew member on this voyage.
Be able to lift 2 full bags of shopping five times, ten jumps with raised arms, stand on each leg for a minimum of five seconds, ten squats, ten step ups.
The exercises are not designed to be physically taxing and almost everyone should be able to complete them. Rather they are in place to check that you have the stability and basic physical condition to be on-board. If when you join the vessel the skipper believes you are not capable of completing these exercises, you will probably not be allowed to embark. If you have any doubts at all about your ability to complete these exercises safely, you must contact your doctor before attempting them.

OPTIONAL OCEAN THEORY TRAINING DAY
This is an entirely optional day prior to the start of the trip in New York City or Newfoundland where we train you in the navigational and passage planning skills needed for an ocean passage.
Do I need to have sailed before?
You’ll need a minimum of a RYA day skipper (ASA 104 or above) or experience of 4 weeks of sailing in the last 5 years.
What is the average crew like?
We get a mix of people from all around the world. Most crew have a few weeks of prior sailing under their belt but are by no means expert sailors. They join us to learn, to have fun and for some incredible sailing. There is usually a 50:50 mix of men and women and the average age is 47, but we get people joining us from 18 years through to 75 years!
I am vegetarian. Is that ok?
Absolutely. Quite a few of us are vegetarian too and you will eat as well as you ever do on board – maybe better!
Will I be safe?
The voyage is run by one of Europe’s leading ocean and adventure sailing companies. Their yachts are highly specialised and have circled the world three times. They also have the most experienced instructors running them. They are full of safety equipment and satellite communications equipment. The safety culture on board is second to none.
What insurance do I need?
It is essential that you have adequate travel insurance in place for your sailing holiday. Once you make an enquiry we can give more details on this including some good offshore sailing policy providers.
Is this an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean qualifying passage?
This trip meets the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean for a qualifying passage, so long as you are a watch leader.
If you wish to join as a watch leader, you must meet the certain criteria – make an enquiry for full details.
It is also compulsory to attend the ‘Ocean Training Day’ which gives you in depth training on how to run an ocean passage.
You must book the watch leader place at the same time as you make your main booking with the operator.
There are only three watch leaders spaces per yacht.
We love this sailing company’s ethos – to help people do three things: sail, train and explore. They are passionate about enabling people to experience life out on the open ocean, building sailing skills and exploring some beautiful countries. After years of training people to become professional sailors, and having covered thousands of miles between them, the company Founders realised that so many people had dreamt of setting off across an ocean, but hadn’t the skills, the boat or crew to make those dreams come true.
The company now runs expeditions on a specialised 60’ yacht to some of the most exciting places out there – often largely inaccessible from land. With no previous sailing experience required, the two instructors will guide you every step of the way as you develop your sailing skills, maybe even earning an RYA qualification during the week. Exploring on land as they go is just as important and the bikes and a kayak mean you can head off and enjoy everything there is to see along the route.
