Sail Madeira to Morocco

Sail Madeira to Morocco

Duration: 14 days
From: £1,959.00

Sail Madeira to Morocco on a two week sailing, training and exploring adventure.

Join this small team to sail Madeira to Morocco on a fantastic two week adventure. Get ready for some sailing, training and exploring from the Portuguese island of Madeira all the way to North Africa, along Europe’s most southern shore.

Starting on the south eastern shores of Madeira, you will do some training, skills and drills, as well as some exploring of the southern shores of Madeira, and maybe even the island of Porto Santo and the stunning Islas de Deserthas. It wasn’t until about 5 million years ago, when volcanic explosions occurred in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean, that Madeira came into existence; and now sitting in the middle of the Atlantic, Madeira is a place of glorious natural beauty and history.

Heading out from the most westerly point of the island, you will sail into the open ocean for 600nm of exhilarating open ocean sailing all the way to the Moroccan port of Tangier. Take some time to practise your sailing skills and enjoy some quiet away from land and technology! Fingers crossed you will catch sight of some wildlife too.

Once you reach Tangier, you will have some time to explore the bustling souks and medina of this fascinating north African city; before sailing on to the rocky town of Gibraltar. If you’re looking to pack in as much culture and sailing into one trip as possible, then this sail Madeira to Morocco trip is for you.

Note: this is a Yachtmaster Ocean qualifying passage for watch leaders.

Trip notes

November 29 – December 12 2020: Crew (£1,959); November 28 – December 12 2020: Watch Leader (£2,109)

The yacht itself is an expedition yacht that was previously a round the world race boat. The accommodation on the yacht is comfortable, warm and spacious. Each bunk is 6′ 7″ long and has its own USB charger and light. Sleeping is in one 8 berth cabin. There are two toilets, a shower, hot water and lots of food!

We eat very well on board and we will take as much fresh fruit and veg as we can. Ocean sailing is an exercise in using food creatively but you can expert lovely warm meals, as much as you can eat, freshly baked bread and more. We can cater for most diets and have loads of veggies on board. If you have any severe allergies you must check with us before booking.

These adventure sailing holidays are open to everyone aged 18 years and over. If you are aged 70 or over, or have any concerns about your health, we ask that you get a doctor’s note before booking. This is just to make as certain as possible that you will be okay out on the water.

To be a watch leader on a Rubicon 3 ocean passage, we require you to have sufficient skills and experience to be able to approach the role meaningfully. This means you should have a minimum of RYA Coastal Skipper practical and theory. We accept international equivalents. After booking, you will be asked to provide evidence of your qualifications.

On arrival, we will ask you to complete a short theory test to ensure that you are at the required level. If you are able to complete RYA Yachtmaster Coastal theory questions, you will be fine. If you are not at the required standard, we will reluctantly downgrade you to a standard crew member.

On booking, you will receive a copy of the Watch Leader’s training manual. This is an invaluable resource and you should try to read as much of it as you can before joining.

You should arrive at the boat the day before the advertised start time, being ready to start studying at 1000 hrs. You will spend a full day learning about passage planning, the yacht and helping prepare the yacht. You will be able to stay on the boat that night.
There is an additional fee of £150 to cover these extra training costs.

Do I need experience?

No previous sailing experience is required.

Do people come alone?

Almost everyone comes alone. Couples and groups are very welcome and we do get them. On the whole, however, most crew join solo and so if you are coming alone, you will be one of the crowd!

How many people are on board?

Except in exceptional circumstances, we limit the crew size to 9 plus two instructors. This means that there are enough people to sale the boat safely, but you will still have lots of time helming, navigating, trimming sails and such like.

Is this a sailing holiday?

Absolutely. You want to sail Madeira to Morocco and we want to ensure everyone has an amazing time. Sailing is about having fun, experiencing nature at its most majestic and gently pushing yourself to try and learn new things. Voyages are a unique mix of sailing and training, and you will get far more involvement and training than on any other sailing holiday you may try!

Who else joins?

We have a remarkably similar group of people who join all our trips. They come from all around the world, are an even mix of men and women and with an average age of 35-65. As we said above, most come alone and experience varies from none at all to Yachtmaster. Most of the crew would describe themselves as having a rusty Day Skipper.

Tour operator

We love this sailing company’s ethos – to help people do three things: sail, train and explore. They are passionate about enabling people to experience life out on the open ocean, building sailing skills and exploring some beautiful countries. After years of training people to become professional sailors, and having covered thousands of miles between them, the company Founders realised that so many people had dreamt of setting off across an ocean, but hadn’t the skills, the boat or crew to make those dreams come true.

The company now runs expeditions on a specialised 60’ yacht to some of the most exciting places out there – often largely inaccessible from land. With no previous sailing experience required, the two instructors will guide you every step of the way as you develop your sailing skills, maybe even earning an RYA qualification during the week. Exploring on land as they go is just as important and the bikes and a kayak mean you can head off and enjoy everything there is to see along the route.
