Sail the Azores to Portugal

Duration: 11 days
From: £700.00

Sail the Azores to Portugal on a beautiful three masted expedition tall ship. A mini Atlantic adventure!

Sail the Azores to Portugal for wonderful open ocean sailing on a traditional tall ship. This is an ocean adventure of epic proportions, sailing across the Atlantic, to the Algarve region on Portugal’s South coast. Learn about Celestial navigation, gain skills in seamanship and learn to live on the ocean, at one with nature.

You really don’t need any sailing experience as the professional and experienced crew will run through everything from safety drills to how to pull ropes efficiently, find the right halliard or steer the 144ft schooner. You don’t even have to be super strong just bags of enthusiasm to sail a traditional commercially coded ocean voyager.

Learn all about sailing a tall ship, work in a watch system, help to navigate the ocean, climb the rigging, mend a sail and get into the rhythm of ocean sailing. This is a great voyage for the experienced  sailor too with plenty of miles, warm weather and seamanship skills to be learnt on deck and aloft.

The Azores has a rich maritime history and has always been a stopping off point for sailors sailing back across the Atlantic from the Caribbean. The exposed tips of vast underwater mountains, the Azores lie on the nexus of the European, American and African tectonic plates, and they bear witness to the forces forever shaping our planet. This is a world of fumaroles, mud pots and scalding springs; of caverns, columns and grottoes formed from once molten rock; of blue lakes ringed by forests of laurel and cedar, and green pastures patterning the slopes of calderas.

Leaving the Portuguese shores of the Azores behind, the ship will set sail again for the final leg of her journey to Portimao, Portugal, roughly 900 miles. On this voyage, you will be promised dolphins and whale sightings as you crusade through the ocean. Just imagine, waking up in your cabin after your watch to the smell of freshly cooked bread and one of the crew members altering everyone that a pod of dolphins is playing along the side of the ship. Grab that camera and get on deck!

Accommodation is provided onboard our tall ship in twin ensuite cabins. Comfortable warm bedding is provided and each cabin has a power socket, heating, and air conditioning. There is a comfortable saloon area on deck level with coffee and tea making facilities. The large deck provides plenty of places to relax and enjoy life on the ocean.

How fast does the boat go?

Our average sailing speed is about 6 knots (nautical miles per hour) – that’s almost 7 land miles per hour. The maximum speed under sail can be over 10 knots. Under engine, the maximum is actually less: only 5 or 6 knots. But sailing is more fun than motoring, so even in light winds we often sail – albeit rather slowly!

What about toilets and showers?

There are toilets and showers on board with ensuite cabins and a shared bathroom in the forepeak. When you arrive at the boat you will be given a housekeeping brief and using the toilets and showers will be explained.

I’ve never been sailing before and I’m worried about not knowing what to do.

The majority of people who sail with us have never sailed before. Don’t worry! The crew will explain things and guide you through everything you need to know to be able to sail the boat. You will get the opportunity to learn lots of new skills and have fun at the same time.
