World Ocean Week 2025
Original post: Another World Adventures
June 2nd to 8th 2025 is World Oceans Week – Larissa Clark, founder of Another World Adventures writes about how our community is playing a part in it.
Born from a deep appreciation of the sea, Another World Adventures was founded after I experienced the transformative power of sailing firsthand when crossing the Atlantic in 2012 aboard a tall ship.
That voyage wasn’t just a physical journey – it ignited my passion for ocean adventure and revealed to me the extraordinary sense of connection that the ocean inspires.
It was here that I discovered a global community bound not by borders, but by the one ocean that connects us all.
This connection – to nature, to self, and to others – sits at the heart of the Another World Adventures mission. Through adventure, we don’t just explore the world. We build a relationship with it.
Why the ocean matters
While the ocean is often romanticised as a place of mystery and wonder – and rightly so – it is also a vital force. It covers over 70% of our planet, produces more than half of the oxygen we breathe, and is home to over 90% of Earth’s wildlife. It plays a central role in regulating our climate, absorbing 50 times more carbon dioxide than the atmosphere.
For more than three billion people, the ocean provides livelihoods through marine and coastal ecosystems. But its value goes far beyond economics – it offers us awe, perspective, play, and healing. It is, quite literally, life-giving. I learned so much about this during my six years working at the Environmental Justice Foundation on their ocean campaigns and encourage you to check them out and support.
At Another World Adventures, every week is Ocean Week.
We see the sea not just as a destination, but as a teacher, a connector, and a source of endless discovery.
All year round, we work with explorers, adventurers, and scientists who deepen our understanding of the ocean and seek ways to protect it.
Many of our tour providers are doing incredible work when it comes to ocean conservation.
In the lead-up to World Oceans Week, I’d like to introduce you to some of these members of our community, through stories and ways you can get involved in this vital mission. From citizen science voyages to meaningful expeditions that support ocean health – here’s how you can celebrate, support, and protect our one ocean.
Freerange Ocean Instagram Live event with UN Ocean Decade and #GenOcean
These days, I am sailing the world with my family aboard Discovery Yacht Freeranger as part of the Free Range Ocean project.
We recently sailed 3,900 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to French Polynesia via Henderson and Pitcairn Islands, collecting data for SeaKeepers’ Neuston Net Research Collective – an initiative pairing vessels with scientists to study life at the ocean’s surface. This research will help scientists and policymakers to better understand and therefore protect our oceans – which may help shape new Marine Protected Areas and global marine policy.
Join Free Range Ocean’s free Instagram Live event with UN Ocean Decade at 9am CEST on Tuesday 10th June to learn more about our journey and the ways you can be involved in citizen science on the water. Follow @thefreerangecrew or @unoceandecade to tune in via Instagram.
Explorers Club New York World Oceans Week events
I’m a member of the Explorers Club New York – an international organisation which promotes scientific advancement through exploration.
Between the 2nd and 6th of June 2025 the organisation is hosting a number of events online and in person which invite you to hear from members of the exploration community. Including discussions on marine wildlife from the (not so) humble seaweed to the mighty osprey and talks from leading conservationists and scientists on ocean floor mapping and conservation, there’s plenty to learn about the world of ocean exploration.
Another World Adventures tour operators making a difference
At Another World Adventures, we focus on curating high-quality, low-impact trips – not simply offering the most tours.
We’re proud to work with operators who are not only offering extraordinary adventures but are also actively contributing to ocean conservation and sustainable travel.
Many of our partners are leading the charge. For example, WavySail has just launched the world’s first fully sustainable expedition yachts, which will journey through the Northwest Passage next year – a groundbreaking step for eco-conscious exploration.
In 2025, you can even join a transatlantic voyage to Chile for the COP30 Climate Conference, offering a rare opportunity to combine slow travel with global climate action.
These are more than trips – they’re journeys with purpose.
Explore our adventures and discover how you can be part of the movement.
Free Range Ocean’s Citizen Science Directory
In addition to our own voyage, my family and I have created the world’s first ocean-impact citizen science directory – where you can discover and join projects from around the globe which are working to protect our ocean.
From monitoring changes to our coastline from the shore to recovering ghost nets from the middle of the ocean, these projects are making a difference in understanding and conserving our oceans.
Check out the ocean citizen science directory to find a project you can participate in!
Women in Ocean Science
I was thrilled to bring two great missions together recently! After renewing my membership to the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund and Trust (ATCF) this year, I nominated UK charity Women in Ocean Science (I am a trustee and on the Advisory Board) to the ATCF grant. The Women in Ocean Science Empower Ocean project – which delivers ocean literacy and dive training programmes to local women living in small-island coral reef communities – won the grant.
Read my blog for ATCF to learn more here and check out the project’s work to discover how it’s making a difference.
Get involved
The ocean connects us all – as travellers, adventurers, and global citizens.
With the privilege of exploring it also comes the responsibility to protect it.
Our hope is for Another World Adventures to play a part in promoting journeys with purpose where we can give back to the waters that give us so much – if you’d like to be part of the movement, get in touch.
With love,
Larissa!
