This blog is part of the Another World Adventures Signature Sabbaticals series, which focuses on unusual and inspired tailormade sabbatical trips whether you’re planning solo, en famille or just the two of you. These trips have been meticulously planned with serious attention to detail, so you can enjoy the ultimate luxury of time to do something uniquely different.

Today, we look at why Baja California, the popular state in northwest Mexico, might be the dream location for your sabbatical. With everything from desert landscapes to thriving marine life, it offers unforgettable experiences carefully curated by our independent operating partner. They specialise in authentic travel experiences that are designed to last longer, and give you more meaningful access to a country and culture.

A riot of colours, flavours and music, Mexico is a vast and varied country which has much more to offer than the stereotypes of tequila, tacos and sombreros. From the glittering waters of the Pacific coast and the wildlife rich Sea of Cortez to the white powdery sands of the Caribbean coast, there’s a wealth of choice for a beach break. Inland you’ll find vibrant towns, ornate architecture, towering volcanoes, rugged canyons, cactus-strewn desert and the exciting metropolis of Mexico City.

As well as a rich and diverse cuisine, you’ll also find a thriving art scene and impressive Mayan and Aztec archaeological sites. However, it’s the people that will likely make your stay in Mexico unforgettable. Friendly, welcoming and decidedly proud of their country, Mexicans will charm you with their honest and open nature and will be sure to teach you a thing or two about Mexico beyond the stereotypes.

Available accommodation includes boutique hotels and casas in the smaller towns, luxury resort hotels, rustic beach cabanas, glamping and everything in between. With 360 days of sunshine a year, Baja California is a year-round destination but the peak time to visit is from November to April when whale sightings are common and temperatures remain in the low-mid 20°C range.

Off The Beaten Path

Explore hidden cave art near the laid back town of Loreto. Spend time with a ranching family in the Sierra La Laguna, learning the skills required to live and work this arid landscape. Camp on a secluded beach in the Espiritu Santo Islands.

Baja California has a particular draw for those who love marine life. Observe the annual grey whale migration in the Baja lagoons (January – February). The Sea of Cortez is host to astonishing biodiversity: manta rays, turtles, whales, sea lions and whale sharks can all be seen here. Humpback whales can be seen from November – April.
