View Dates

Brimming with incredible landscapes and super friendly locals, Bali and Lombok are the ideal havens for the nature-loving traveller.

On this 12-day active adventure, you’ll go white water rafting just outside of lush Ubud, stroll through rice paddies and small villages on the way to Candidasa, wind your way along the slopes of Mount Agung and climb the mythical route to Lempuyang Temple. Relax on the beach, trek through monkey-filled forests to Mt Rinjani and go snorkelling in search of sea turtles in the remote Gili Islands. Learn about Balinese cultures and traditions along the way, from Hindu temples to old-fashioned blacksmithing and get to know the easy going Balinese way of life!

Why you'll love this adventure

  • Hike through lush forests as you make the challenging full-day climb to the rim of Mt Rinjani, where spectacular views across Bali, the Gili Islands and Mt Agung reward your efforts.
  • Swim and snorkel among the colourful marine life and friendly sea turtles on a boat trip around the Gili Islands – this paradisical archipelago will steal your heart!
  • Navigate through Class 2 and Class 3 rapids on a whitewater rafting experience just outside of Ubud, against a backdrop of green rainforest, deep gorges and lush rice paddies.
  • Leave the tourist trail in Eastern Bali as you visit the lesser-known temples and villages of Tenganan Village and Pura Luhur Lempuyang. These are golden opportunities to learn about local Balinese culture.
  • Kick back and relax on the remote beaches of Amed and Gili Air with free time under the sun – the perfect places to rest your weary muscles after hiking and biking around Bali.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, World Bicycle Relief. Donations provide school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas with bicycles that provide access to education, healthcare, and income.

Food and dietary requirements

While travelling with us you’ll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader or local representative will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let your booking agent know prior to departure.

INDONESIAN FOOD:
Here are 10 quintessential dishes you have to try while travelling in Indonesia: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-eat-in-indonesia/

VEGETARIANS & VEGANS:
Strict vegetarians should be aware that a lot of Indonesian cooking contains fermented shrimp paste (terasi) as a basic ingredient. Chicken and eggs are also common in many dishes. Although there are many vegetarian options available, please ensure you are specific as possible when ordering food to ensure that your meal suits your dietary needs. If you are travelling to Ubud, see our guide to vegan and vegetarian eats: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/vegan-vegetarian-guide-to-ubud/

Who is this trip for?

Is this trip right for you

This trip is designed for those who love to get active. While prior training may not be necessary, a good level of fitness will help you to get the most out of the activities on this trip.

The white water rafting excursion just outside Ubud (Day 2), involves Grade 2 and 3 rapids, so a level of confidence in the water is essential. Similarly, you’ll need to be a confident swimmer for the Gili Islands snorkelling trip (Day 11).

You will cycle from the hills inland of Candidasa to the coast with a distance of approximately 31 km, which involves some hill climbs and steep descents and some off road sections.

Be prepared for a few nights without hot showers – hot water can sometimes be unreliable at some destinations.

The hike to the Mt Rinjari crater is demanding and can vary a great deal depending on the weather. The climb involves an ascent of 2000 m and a distance of 9 km in each direction with some steep and dusty sections. Be sure to bring strong, sturdy walking shoes and clothes for cold temperatures and an overnight bag that you’ll need to carry. All camping gear will be carried by porters.

Health

GENERAL HEALTH
All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell prior to travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.

When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that if in the assessment of our group leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government’s foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION:
Not all medications available over the counter or by prescription in your home country are available in other countries. Some may be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by a doctor. Always carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating what the medicine is, how much you take and that it’s for personal use only.

MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES:
Several mosquito-borne illnesses occur in Indonesia, including malaria, dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis. The risk of infection remains low. Protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses by taking measures to avoid insect bites, including using insect repellent and wearing long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing. Speak to your doctor about prevention and vaccinations before you travel.

DENGUE FEVER
Due a rise in cases, the regional government currently recommends that all travellers to Bali are vaccinated against dengue fever.

RABIES:
Rabies is a risk throughout Indonesia, especially in Bali. Avoid direct contact with dogs and other animals, including monkeys. Don’t feed or pat them. This includes monkeys in popular markets, tourist destinations and sanctuaries where you may be encouraged to interact with them. If bitten or scratched, immediately use soap and water to wash the wound thoroughly. Seek urgent medical attention.

Pre-exposure vaccine is available but receiving rabies vaccine prior to travel does not preclude the need for post-exposure medical evaluation and additional doses of rabies vaccine. There is a shortage of rabies vaccine in Indonesia and if you are bitten by an animal you should consider travelling to a 3rd country or your country of origin for treatment.

POISONING FROM ALCOHOLIC DRINKS:
There are known cases of poisoning from alcoholic drinks contaminated by harmful substances, most recently in Bali and Lombok. Drink only at reputable venues, avoid home-made alcohol and seek urgent medical attention if you suspect poisoning.

PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES:
Do not consume any non-prescription drugs in Indonesia, including magic mushrooms. They are highly dangerous and illegal. Indonesia carries high penalties, including the death penalty.

Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group – patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone’s travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don’t keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well – this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

SOLO TRAVELLERS
On our trips, rooming is organised on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender, as per the gender marker on each of their passports.

We also offer an optional single supplement on most trips for travellers who prefer to have their own room. This only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre-trip and post-trip accommodation booked through us will always be on a single-room basis.

On a small selection of trips some accommodation will be open-gender and multishare, such as a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam. Please review the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information for details about your trip.

LGBTQIA+ TRAVELLERS
We strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. If your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

Covid-19

This operator has a policy in place for COVID-19 and their adventures. Please request full details so we can share the most up to date information with you. Thanks!

Tour operator

We love this operator for the freedom and flexibility they give travellers to get off the tourist trails and really experience local cultures. Their style of small group travel is perfect for solo travellers, couples or small groups of friends and their grassroots style of travel seeks to have a positive impact on the communities they visit.

They use local leaders, local accommodation & transport and support local community projects, ensuring sustainability is at the centre of everything they do.

In addition, they expect their staff and travellers to demonstrate the principles of responsible travel – respecting people, cultures and local environments; in the distribution of wealth; in good will and cross-cultural sharing; and in contributing to sustainable development.
