Sail the Southern Ocean – Montevideo – Ushuaia

Duration: 16 days
View Dates

A beautiful two-week voyage from Montevideo to Ushuaia on board a traditional tall ship as hands-on guest crew.

Setting sail from the busy port of Montevideo, you’ll navigate the South Atlantic, making your way through the Strait of Magellan and into the waters of Tierra del Fuego. Along the way, you’ll pass the Patagonian coastline, with its rugged cliffs and wilderness before entering the Beagle Channel, where a festive Christmas dinner awaits, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Beagle.

The voyage is rich with wildlife encounters, where albatrosses and petrels soar effortlessly over the waves, while dolphins often make an appearance alongside the ship. As you sail further south, keep an eye out for Magellanic penguins, cormorants and even the occasional sighting of whales, known to inhabit these nutrient rich waters.

Whether you’re a wildlife and nature lover, or a sailor looking for a challenge to navigate these waters in ever-changing conditions, this is going to be a fantastic warm-up before the Antarctica season begins. As you depart from the warm waters of Montevideo, you’ll experience a noticeable shift in the environment sailing further south into the cooler waters of the South Atlantic. This transition is what makes this voyage so special, offering a perfect opportunity to experience challenges of sailing in these waters.

Previous sailing experience is not necessary but sailing is a big part of the experience. The professional crew will teach you as much as you’d like to know about navigation, manoeuvres, weather observations, furling the sails, and more.

Accommodation

The ship is ideal for ocean crossings and longer voyages, with various places for relaxing: library, lounge, poker corner and deckhouse. These different areas allow you to do your own thing: perhaps some quiet reading or a more active role in the social life in the deckhouse. The ship is equipped with a DVD player, a CD player, i-Pod connection and radio.

There are four 2-person cabins, four 4-person cabins and four 6-person cabins. The comfortable cabins each have an en-suite toilet and shower. An experienced cook and cook’s assistant will prepare three meals a day.

The ship is a Dutch vessel and part of the permanent crew is Dutch. But we have an international crew and guest crew and you will find various nationalities among them. The common language on board is English.

Meals

The ship’s cook and assistant provide 3 delicious, freshly made meals a day. Meal options on board are: non-vegetarian or vegetarian. Due to the limited size of the ship’s galley and storage all other meal requirements and allergies need to be checked with our cook. A vegan diet cannot be catered for on board.

Who is this trip for?

The voyage attracts sailors, wildlife lovers, photographers and those looking for a once in a lifetime adventure.

Being fit and healthy is extremely important when undertaking a voyage on a sailing and moving vessel in remote areas where no extra medical care is available. Being able to move around smoothly when under sail is a challenge for all sailors on board so building up your fitness before the voyage is highly recommended.

Additional notes

Life on board

The ship is registered as a sail training ship and as such you will be mustered as voyage crew. This means that, more so than on a passenger ship, you will get extensive safety instructions and we ask you to join in the watch system. Participating in sailing and running the ship is part of the overall experience on board. The level of participation will depend on your interest and physical condition. On deck you work together with the permanent crew.

The watch system consists of joining the permanent crew for 4 hours, after which you will be off for 8 hours. Everyone is welcome to take the helm, set sails, assist with manoeuvres, navigation, weather observations, furling the sails on the yards and much more.

The permanent crew will give lectures and instruct you during the voyage in steering, navigation and line handling.

Tour operator

Originally built in 1910, this beautifully restored Dutch tall ship has been crossing oceans and seas on a regular basis since 2000 and has a reputation of a ship that really sails.

Following the favourable winds of traditional sailing routes has brought her to all the continents sailing both the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, thus earning her nick name ‘ocean wanderer’.

Crew and guests join the ship from all over the world and all ages. As a sail training vessel, everyone on board is assigned to the watch system to help sail the ship - navigating, taking the helm and handling the sails. Sailing experience is not required just a desire to sail to new horizons and experience all aspects of a sailor’s life on board: The wind, the sea, new friends and adventure.
