Madagascar to Zanzibar Passage
Dreaming of sailing downwind across the Indian Ocean? In 2026 you can take the helm on a voyage departing Nosy Be, Madagascar, and making landfall in Zanzibar.
The journey begins with short hops to Russian Bay — where local fishermen may paddle out with lobster — and the sand-fringed islet of Nosy Iranja. From there, the route stretches into a 600-nautical-mile passage, carried by strong east-west currents and steady trades. Conditions may allow a detour to Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site alive with giant tortoises, before shaping north past Mayotte and the Comoros.
Reaching the African coast, sheltered Mikindani Bay near Mtwara offers a glimpse into history at Livingstone’s House, while further north, Mafia Island provides the extraordinary chance to swim with whale sharks in season.
Between offshore passages, there’s time to drop anchor off remote beaches, snorkel coral reefs, and enjoy the rhythm of life under sail. The passage concludes in storied Stone Town, Zanzibar.
Why you'll love this adventure

Itinerary
This sailing adventure begins in Nosy Be and ends in Zanzibar. Along the way, the route shifts from Madagascar’s rugged coast into open ocean, before tracing East Africa’s shores. Each day is guided by wind and current — some are brisk downwind runs, others ease into quiet anchorages perfect for beach-hopping or slipping into turquoise lagoons. Stops may include Russian Bay, Nosy Iranja, and even Aldabra Atoll if conditions allow. On the Tanzanian coast, Mikindani Bay offers a slice of history while Mafia Island is renowned for encounters with gentle whale sharks. No two voyages are alike. It’s an itinerary led by nature, blending the thrill of ocean sailing with rare wildlife encounters and the serenity of tropical beaches.

Accommodation
The voyage takes place aboard, a 40-foot Fontaine Pajot Lavessi catamaran designed for comfort and capable offshore sailing. With a generous cockpit and extended stern platform, she is well suited to relaxed socialising, easy snorkelling access, and long days under sail.
She makes offshore passages at an average of around 6 knots — fast enough to cover meaningful ground, yet leaving plenty of time to enjoy remote anchorages or explore ashore. A sturdy tender ensures smooth trips to the islands and bays visited along the way.
Accommodation is arranged in four private cabins, two in each hull, with a shared heads and shower per hull. Bedding is provided, and the thoughtful layout offers both comfort and privacy. Whether trimming sails offshore or unwinding at anchor, Synergy balances practicality with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Meals
This voyage is designed for you to take an active role – that means everyone will take turns in cooking (all the menus are planned already and step by step instructions given, so you don’t need to be a masterchef!)
Who is this trip for?
You do not need any previous sailing experience for this trip – it is a ‘hands-on’ sailing trip under the expert guidance of a very experienced Skipper who will ensure everyone gets the most out of the voyage learning or brushing up skills and being full immersed in the journey.
