What’s Better Than Driving Scotland’s North Coast 500? Sailing It.

Some journeys become legendary. Route 66. Australia’s Great Ocean Road. California’s Pacific Coast Highway. Scotland’s North Coast 500.
Every year, thousands of travellers pack the car and set off to explore one of Britain’s most celebrated road trips. But what if there was an even better way?
Instead of following the coastline from layby to layby, imagine tracing the same spectacular route under sail. Arriving in colourful fishing villages from the water. Anchoring beneath towering sea cliffs. Exploring secluded bays that can’t be reached by road. Watching Scotland’s rugged coastline unfold exactly as generations of sailors have experienced it.
That’s exactly what makes this new adventure so special.
Inspired by the famous North Coast 500, this 35-day sailing expedition circumnavigates Scotland, offering a completely different perspective on one of Europe’s most spectacular coastlines. Beginning and ending in Largs, the voyage heads north through the Hebrides before rounding the wild northwest coast, passing Cape Wrath, exploring the Orkney Islands and returning via the remarkable Caledonian Canal—one of Britain’s greatest inland waterways.
While the route mirrors the spirit of the North Coast 500, the experience couldn’t be more different. Rather than stopping wherever the road allows, you’ll discover Scotland from the sea, dropping anchor in peaceful bays, arriving in harbours under sail and spending your days immersed in an ever-changing landscape shaped by wind, tides and weather.
One of the things we particularly like about this expedition is its flexibility. You don’t need to commit to the entire circumnavigation to enjoy the adventure.
The voyage is divided into three individual 10-day legs, making it easy to fit around work, holidays or existing sailing plans. Of course, if you’ve always dreamed of sailing around Scotland, you can also join the full expedition and experience the complete journey.
As with all of our hands-on sailing adventures, this is far more than simply travelling from A to B. You’ll become an active member of a small crew aboard a comfortable Bavaria 46 offshore cruising yacht, learning alongside highly experienced skipper Fred Conradie. Whether it’s taking the helm, trimming sails, navigating or standing watch, every day offers the chance to build confidence while sharing the experience with a small group of like-minded adventurers.
We love journeys that encourage people to experience familiar destinations in completely new ways, and this expedition does exactly that. Scotland’s dramatic coastline, rich maritime history and world-class sailing combine to create an adventure that’s every bit as memorable as the famous road trip that inspired it.
The North Coast 500 may have earned its reputation as one of Britain’s greatest drives. But if you ask us, it might just be even better by sea.
