A chance to join a crew of 10 to embark on a sail adventure mainland to mainland transatlantic from Lorient in France to New York City, USA.
In May 2025, an ocean adventure awaits those with a passion for the open sea. Aboard a fantastic Challenge 67s, a 21-meter crewed monohull, adventure seekers have the unique opportunity to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and actively participate in the journey of a lifetime. Departing from the picturesque Lorient in Southern Brittany, the destination is set for the iconic city of New York, promising a transatlantic voyage filled with challenges and rewards.
The expedition kicks off with a course towards Horta on the island of Faial in the Azores—a crucial first leg in this East-West Atlantic crossing. The duration of the stopover in Horta is contingent upon the unpredictable nature of the weather on the second leg. Whether it be a brief pause for favorable conditions or a slightly extended stay due to strategic planning, the ultimate goal is reaching New York under optimal circumstances. The decision rests in the hands of the experienced skipper, ensuring a seamless and efficient journey.
Covering a distance of 1200 nautical miles from Lorient to Horta, the first leg spans 6 to 7 days, subject to the whims of the weather. From Horta to New York, the direct route spans 2050 nautical miles, approximately fifteen days of sailing. The route is projected to be a balance of upwind and downwind segments, with the intricacies of weather conditions guided by a professional router ashore. However, the true heartbeat of the journey lies within the hands of the crew, who play an integral role in making the boat sail.
As a crew member, participants are fully immersed in the offshore sailing experience. Engaging in sailing watches for about 8 hours within a 24-hour cycle and stewardship duties, such as cooking and washing up, individuals must be prepared to face the elements—be it adverse weather, cold, humidity, or heat. The transatlantic crossing demands psychological readiness, as each member contributes to the rhythm and success of the journey.
The professional crew leading this oceanic expedition comprises two seasoned sailors with Merchant Navy and Youth & Sport qualifications. Their primary responsibilities include supervising the ten-member crew and ensuring the safety of the vessel. This committed crossing emphasizes active participation, with every crew member playing a vital role in running the yacht—no mere cruise, but an immersive experience.
The Challenge 67s, purposely void of pilots or furlers, embody the essence of ocean sailing. Built for the BT Global Challenge, a crewed round-the-world race against prevailing winds, these vessels are rigged as cutters, featuring a staysail, Yankee 1/2/3, large genoa, and asymmetric spinnaker in their wardrobe.
Communication on board is reserved exclusively for the safety of the crew. Satellite telephone (Iridium) and email communications are not provided, emphasizing the isolation of the open sea. As participants approach the coast, the use of personal mobile phones allows for reassurance to loved ones, but before embarking on this extraordinary journey, crew members must communicate the temporary unavailability until the completion of their transatlantic crossing.
There are some additional practical requirements including a French sailing license which can be organised with the operator and the US has special visa requirements for entering by sea.
