Original post: Another World Adventures
Romania – not your on your travel hit list? Well it should be and we’ve found an alternative horse riding adventure that offers a perfect way to see it.
This is a country steeped in Transylvania legend and wonderfully preserved medieval history from Sighisoara to Bram Castle ( yes, of Bram Stoker’s Dracula fame.) The former communist country is full of surprises and is small enough so that in a few hours you can go from the Danube to Bucharest to the Black Sea.
Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains (reaching up to 3000 metres) there is a huge amount of natural beauty. For bird and nature lovers, there’s the Danube Delta, arguably the most beautiful region in the county. This well-preserved delta, and the largest in all of Europe, has over 300 bird species. It’s been declared a biosphere reserve and really ought to be on everyone’s must-see list.
Outdoor adventurers can enjoy the wonderful climbing, trekking and skiing opportunities but horse riding enables you to get out into really get off the beaten track. We love this fantastic alternative horse riding adventure through northern Romania leaving this July which also offers a rare opportunity to ride with racing legend Richard Dunwoody.
This small group adventure will take you into the remote landscapes of an ancient land giving you the sensation of travelling back a couple of centuries into Medieval Europe. Its five full days riding through the Bucovina region, which is filled with painted monasteries and wooden churches and maintains a great deal of character and charm. The operator has chosen some wonderfully atmospheric accommodations and the cuisine in this region is really worth writing home about.
When we think of Romania, we think of natural beauty and colourful folk culture. This alternative horseback riding adventure brings you both. You’ll explore one of Europe’s largest wilderness areas, spend a night in Putna Monastery, and spend time learning the traditional ways of northern rural Romania. If you’re looking for something different and incredibly fun, this adventure has your name on it.
