Is staying in your comfort zone a myth?

We often hear that magic happens outside your comfort zone – but what does that really mean? At Another World Adventures, we believe that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that push us outside of what we thought was possible. Where challenge is part of the journey, not something to fear.

What is the comfort zone?

The comfort zone is a psychological state where we feel safe, in control, and free from stress. It’s familiar, predictable – and often mistaken for the place we’re supposed to stay. Stepping beyond it means trying something new or unfamiliar, often triggering anxiety, self-doubt, or fear of failure. But not all fear signals real danger.

Much of it is learned – shaped by those around us, amplified by media, and rooted in narratives that encourage caution over curiosity. In much of the Western world, there is an era of unprecedented safety, yet we’re more fear-driven than ever. Often, our comfort zones shrink not because of real threats, but because of imagined ones – and that’s where adventure becomes transformative.

How adventure helps us to expand our comfort zone

There is no doubt that many adventures come with some element of risk. But equipped with knowledge, adequate equipment and strong support networks these risks can be moderated. Fear makes way for awe, amazement and unprecedented joy as we are able to immerse ourselves in incredible landscapes, wild places and to connect with something bigger.

Adventure helps us to expand our comfort zone, whether it’s learning skills in self-sufficiency, taking on a physical challenge or visiting a place unlike anywhere we’ve ever been before. It exposes us to something new, and while often this starts with feelings of both excitement and discomfort, particularly in the build up, there’s a reason many adventurers come back for more.

By trying new things through adventure we are in the privileged position to be able to open our hearts and minds and learn more about ourselves and the world. We are able to build confidence and have hard evidence of how capable we are.

It’s not about escaping fear

When we see people going on incredible adventures, it’s easy to simply assume ‘they’re far braver than me’ or that ‘they don’t feel afraid’. But the truth is, for most people it’s not that they don’t experience fear, it’s that they understand how to co-exist with it and carry on anyway.

In this honest reflection from her unsupported Pacific crossing by sailboat with her husband and two young kids, our founder Larissa shares how even seasoned adventurers are pushed to their limits – and why that’s where real transformation begins.

“On our recent Pacific crossing, I found myself right at the edge of my comfort zone – and often far beyond it more than once! Despite all the sailing I’ve done, there were moments I truly questioned what on earth I was doing out there. Yes, there was a lot of euphoric moments too. But there were times I can confess that I actually hated it, when I felt completely overwhelmed and uncertain about the choices that had led me to that moment.

But I’ve come to believe that discomfort is part of the process. Sometimes you have to hit emotional lows to bounce back even higher. That kind of deep challenge strips everything back – and what’s left is a stronger, more capable version of yourself.

Looking back now, even those tough moments mid-ocean, I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Because to get to that place of growth, perspective, and magic you have to go the distance. You have to take the leap and often everything you ever dreamed of is on the other side of fear.”

How to step outside of your comfort zone

While Larissa’s story is inspiring, there are many different ways of using adventure to step outside of our comfort zone. You don’t have to sail unsupported across an ocean. It can be just as fulfilling to start smaller and build confidence.

Committing to a supported adventure like those offered by Another World Adventures, also makes things far more manageable. You’ll have the expertise of people who’ve done it before, who know the area and can guide you on safety, so you can focus on enjoying the experience.

Larissa’s recent journey across the Pacific – and the creation of Another World Adventures – all began with her crossing the Atlantic as part of a tall ship crew. Larissa had very little sailing experience before this journey and it was a starting point for moving into ocean conservation, environmental communications and sailing around the world with her family.
