Looking down a ship in sail! A man stands holding a helm as big as him as the rest of the crew sit to the side enjoying the wind and calm seas

When you imagine ultimate freedom, what comes to mind? For us, it’s sailing across an ocean.

Days from land, beyond the reach of phone signals, cities, and the noise of modern life it’s just you and an oceanic wilderness. Overthinking and overwhelm become a thing of the past, whilst your body and mind falls into the rhythm of the sea. Days are spent living presently, in line with the weather, waves and currents – and time loses its grip. As you gaze at the endless blue surroundings, wind in your hair, it’s easy to feel utterly alive.

Sailing across the Atlantic is a unique experience, which beckons you to dig deeper, reconnect with yourself and be humbled by nature’s scale. It’s where strangers become shipmates, routines give way to intuition, and rare wildlife moments etch themselves into memory.

With the approach of the westbound Transat season, we’ve got some fantastic oceanic odysseys lined up. Keep reading to discover your Transatlantic adventure and answers to some of your Transat-related questions.

Sail across the Atlantic with Another World Adventures

Another World Adventures was born out of founder Larissa’s own oceanic odyssey – a Transatlantic crossing she undertook early on in her sailing career. Since then, Larissa has been working to provide others with the same opportunity. Here are some of our upcoming Transatlantic crossings:

Sail Across the Atlantic Ocean – Tenerife to Montevideo

Sailing across the Atlantic FAQs

Curious about crossing the Atlantic? Here are some answers to FAQs to give you a better idea on what to expect.

How long does it take to sail across the Atlantic?

The duration depends on a few key factors: your route, the type of vessel, weather conditions, and whether you make stopovers along the way. Typically, an Atlantic crossing takes between 2 to 4 weeks at sea.

How hard is it?

That depends on you, the conditions, and your mindset. Some people love the solitude; others find the isolation challenging. Seasickness affects some but not all. Ocean crossings can be physically and mentally demanding – but they’re also deeply rewarding. It helps to understand your own strengths and potential challenges before departure. On all our voyages, you’ll be supported by experienced, professional skippers who guide you every step of the way.

Do I need sailing experience?

The level of experience required varies between trips. For some, having an RYA Competent Crew certificate or similar foundation is helpful, especially for understanding basic sailing skills, safety, and terminology. Many of our voyages are designed to help you build experience at sea, so even adventurous beginners are welcome – just check the trip details.

What time of year can I sail across the Atlantic?

There are two main windows for transatlantic crossings, timed around weather patterns and hurricane seasons. Westbound voyages (east to west) from Europe or the Canaries to the Caribbean are typically between November and January, when the trade winds are most favourable. Eastbound (west to east) journeys from the Caribbean or Americas to Europe are usually between April and June, after the Caribbean season ends and before the mid-summer storms.
