Three Extraordinary Indian Ocean Sailing Adventures
Original post: Another World Adventures
If you’ve ever dreamed of learning to sail across warm turquoise seas, exploring remote islands that few travellers ever reach, or simply experiencing life aboard a catamaran with a tiny crew and an exceptional skipper, we’ve just added three incredible Indian Ocean adventures for 2027.
These aren’t cruises. They’re genuine hands-on sailing expeditions where you’ll become part of the crew, learning everything from helming and sail trim to navigation and passage-making under the guidance of skippers with hundreds of thousands of offshore miles behind them. Whether you’re completely new to sailing or looking to build experience, these voyages are designed to immerse you in life at sea.
Sail Zanzibar to Madagascar
Leave the winding streets of Stone Town behind and set course on one of the Indian Ocean’s great blue-water passages. Over 16 unforgettable days you’ll sail roughly 1,000 nautical miles towards Madagascar, with opportunities to visit Pemba Island, remote sandbars, the volcanic Comoro Islands and the stunning twin islands of Nosy Iranja before arriving in Nosy Be. Expect tropical anchorages, night watches beneath spectacular stars and some exhilarating offshore sailing.
Sail Madagascar to Zanzibar
The return voyage offers a completely different perspective. Departing Madagascar’s northern coast, favourable trade winds and currents create a superb downwind passage before the adventure slows into sheltered coastal cruising through Tanzania’s remote islands and Swahili settlements. Highlights may include Russian Bay, Mikindani Bay, the Songo Songo Archipelago, Mafia Island’s famous whale sharks and a memorable landfall in the UNESCO World Heritage streets of Stone Town.
Tanzania Explorer
If you prefer exploring rather than crossing oceans, the Tanzania Explorer is a brilliant alternative. Beginning and ending in Stone Town, this 10-day voyage explores one of East Africa’s least-visited cruising grounds. Depending on the weather and the wishes of the crew, the route may head north through the spectacular Pemba Channel, south to Mafia Island Marine Park or into the quiet anchorages of the Songo Songo Archipelago. Every departure is different, making each trip a unique adventure.
Small crews. Big adventures.
One of the things we love most about these voyages is their intimate feel. The Tanzania Explorer carries a maximum of just four guests, while the offshore passages also operate with very small crews, ensuring everyone has plenty of opportunities to get involved and receive personal tuition. All three adventures take place aboard a comfortable 40-foot Fontaine Pajot Lavessi catamaran that strikes the perfect balance between capable offshore sailing and relaxed tropical living.
Whether you’re looking for your first offshore passage, hoping to build sailing miles, or simply want to experience some of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful islands from the best possible viewpoint, these new 2027 departures deserve a place on your adventure shortlist.
