Ocean Crossings, Remote Islands and Life Aboard an Expedition Sailing Vessel
Original post: Another World Adventures
What if you could join a sailing expedition almost anywhere in the world on an epic 72ft offshore expedition sailing yacht – where you are the crew?
A newly released expedition sailing schedule offers exactly that: a collection of hands-on voyages linking Scotland, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Galápagos, French Polynesia, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, Baja California and Costa Rica over the course of a single remarkable year.
These aren’t cruises. They’re genuine sailing expeditions where guests become part of the crew, helping navigate, stand watch, trim sails and experience life at sea while travelling through some of the world’s most fascinating marine environments.
At the heart of the programme is a 72ft steel expedition sailing vessel originally built for one of the world’s toughest around-the-world yacht races. Designed for ocean crossings and remote exploration, the vessel is capable of operating in some of the most challenging conditions on the planet while remaining accessible to adventurous travellers with little or no previous sailing experience.
With space for just 10 guest crew, life onboard is immersive and highly participatory. You’ll learn directly from experienced sailors, stand watch beneath star-filled skies, help navigate across oceans, share meals with your crewmates and become part of a small team working together to move a capable expedition vessel across some of the world’s most extraordinary waters.
For many people, that experience becomes just as memorable as the destinations themselves.
The schedule begins in the North Atlantic, with voyages linking the Faroe Islands, the Hebrides and Scotland before heading south through the Bay of Biscay and onwards to the Canary Islands. Adventurous sailors can then join one of the world’s most iconic ocean crossings as part of the ARC transatlantic rally, arriving in the Caribbean after weeks under sail.
From there, the focus shifts west.
Routes through the San Blas Islands, Panama and the Galápagos lead into one of the standout adventures of the entire programme: a true trans-Pacific crossing from the Galápagos Islands to the Marquesas. Covering around 3,000 nautical miles of open ocean, it is the kind of voyage many sailors dream about for years.
The Pacific adventures continue through the remote Tuamotu Archipelago before heading north across both the Equator and International Date Line to Kiritimati. Another expedition explores the waters around the remote Palmyra Atoll before making landfall in Hawaii.
For those drawn to coastal exploration rather than long ocean passages, there are opportunities to sail through the wildlife-rich waters of the Salish Sea between Seattle and Vancouver, follow historic Pacific coast routes south to San Francisco, explore the legendary Sea of Cortez, and continue all the way to Costa Rica.
What makes this collection particularly exciting is the variety.
Some voyages are ideal for first-time expedition sailors looking to experience life offshore. Others are serious bluewater passages designed for those wanting to build ocean miles and confidence. Some focus on island exploration and remote anchorages, while others tackle some of the world’s great ocean crossings.
Together they form a remarkable collection of adventures spanning thousands of nautical miles and some of the most spectacular waters on Earth.
