Top American Wilderness Destinations
Original post: Another World Adventures
With over 100 million acres, the National Wilderness Preservation System in the U.S. is as diverse as it is stunning.
There are also an additional 59 national parks. From back country spots and lowlands, to the highest peaks in the country, and from overnight camping trips to six month long treks along the Pacific Coast Trail, America has it covered.
Check out some of our top American wilderness destinations:
The Grand Canyon
Grand really isn’t a big enough word to describe what you’ll feel when you arrive at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s roughly 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and about one-mile-deep – mind-blowing proportions that are sure to make you stand in awe at the majesty of Mother Earth. The South Rim is the most popular place for sightseers and amenities. For those looking for an escape, check out the North Rim for serious hiking and fantastic camping opportunities.
Yellowstone National Park
Covering over 2.2 million acres through Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, Yellowstone National Park is an unbelievable paradise. Be sure to check out popular spots like Old Faithful, and then head into the largely untouched territory to explore. We recommend West Thumb Geyser Basin and Dogshead Loop. And when you get overwhelmed by all the canyons, geysers, and waterfalls that you want to see, remember, you can (and probably will) always come back.
John Muir Wilderness
Named after the well-respected advocate and conservationist, this designated wilderness area runs along the Sierra Nevadas in California. It’s teeming with snow-capped mountains dotted with lush and gorgeous meadows. Most of the designated wilderness stands above 10,000 feet – making it a perfect destination for climbers and hikers. Be prepared for the wildlife – including the possibility of black bears.
Linville Gorge Wilderness
Thanks to the rough terrain, this is one of the few old-growth forests left within the Blue Ridge Mountain range. Located in North Carolina, Linville is the only gorge in the country without a road along the bottom – making for some spectacular and secluded adventures. Be sure to check out Jonas Ridge if you like rock climbing, Linville Falls for great fishing and backpacking, and Brushy Ridge for some extreme solitude.
Shenandoah Wilderness
Located in Virginia and nearby to the Appalachian Trail as well as Skyline Drive, Shenandoah is a popular destination. Once almost destroyed by logging, conservation efforts have restored much of the area. Home to deer, bobcats, bears, wild turkey, you’re sure to spot some great wildlife. And with over 200 bird species, the area makes for great birding.
American national parks have been protected since the early part of the 20th century and its wilderness areas for the last fifty years. It’s a big country with incredible options for your next adventure.
And finally, when it comes to American wilderness destinations we turn to Alaska.
Alaska, often called “The Last Frontier” has been the crown jewel for adventure travellers in North America. If you’re dreaming of an action packed adventure into the deep wilderness look no further than this epic camping road trip in a converted yellow school bus!
