Original post: Another World Adventures
Could you imagine climbing the rigging, taking the helm, or furling the sails?
Many of us dream of joining the crew of a historic tall ship, but what does life actually look like on board and how do you get there?
At Another World Adventures we love helping people turn their sailing dreams into reality. We’ve been helping to connect adventure lovers to their dream voyages for over 10 years. In this blog we’re going to be answering some of our most frequently asked questions, from timings to pricing, giving you all the information you need to plan your first tall ship adventure.
Are you ready to join the crew….
Where You Can Go: Unveiling the World Aboard Tall Ships
The real question is… Where can’t you go? From the rugged beauty of Iceland to the crystal clear waters of the Pacific Islands. Join historic ships as they sail to Antarctica or take on the ‘Everest of Sailing’ The North West Passage.
Embarking on a tall ship adventure with Another World Adventures opens up a world of possibilities. We work with a small but mighty network of ocean wanderers and sail training vessels that you can join as guest crew all around the world.
Sailing across the Atlantic by tall ship was the catalyst behind our adventure travel advisory back in 2011 so it’s at the heart of what we do!
Picture yourself crossing the Atlantic Ocean under sail, navigating the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, exploring the fjords of Scandinavia, or sailing through the mighty waves of the Southern Ocean.
With a wide range of itineraries, there’s a tall ship adventure for every kind of explorer.

What It’s Like On Board: A Glimpse into Life at Sea
Life on board a tall ship is an immersive experience that blends adventure, camaraderie, and skill-building.
Imagine waking up to the sound of waves against the hull, the creaking of the ship’s timbers, and the salty breeze in your hair.
Your days will be filled with hands-on activities, from navigating and steering the ship to learning the art of sailmaking, rigging, and carpentry.
Onboard, you’ll become part of a close-knit community, working together to keep the ship sailing smoothly and forging lifelong friendships with your fellow crew members.
We could go on but our Another World community say it better:
“My time aboard was incredible; it was an adventure of a lifetime. I did, saw and experienced things I didn’t believe would be possible but best of all were the people I had the pleasure to sail with as well as those I met on-shore”. – Stew, South Pacific voyage
How Much Does It Cost: Investing in an Unforgettable Experience
Joining a tall ship adventure comes with a cost, but the value of the experience is immeasurable.
The price varies depending on the length of the voyage, the destination, and the amenities on board.
Another World Adventures prides itself on providing unique and affordable opportunities, making the dream of tall ship sailing accessible to a broad range of adventurers.
The cost typically covers accommodation, meals, training, and the chance to explore captivating ports of call.
What Experience Do I Need: Sailing into the Unknown
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need extensive sailing experience to join a tall ship adventure. Quite the opposite!
Our network welcomes sailors of all skill levels, from novices to seasoned mariners.
The experienced crew will provide comprehensive training, ensuring you’re equipped with the skills needed to contribute to the smooth operation of the ship.
Whether you’re a landlubber or a seasoned sailor, the tall ship community is welcoming to all who have a passion for the open sea.
What Will I Learn: A Curriculum of Seamanship and Life Lessons
Embarking on a tall ship adventure is not just a journey across the seas; it’s an education in itself.
Throughout the voyage, you’ll gain hands-on experience in seamanship, steering a tall ship, small boat handling, sailmaking, rigging, celestial navigation, carpentry, ropework, Rules of the Road, caulking, diesel mechanics, and much more.
The ports you visit become your classrooms, offering lessons in cultural exchange and global understanding.
Your shipmates become both teachers and friends, creating an environment of continuous learning and personal growth.
“If we could put all that you learn on such a voyage in a book, we would but we can’t. But learn, you will.” says one of our Captains!
What Ages: Adventures enriched by mixed-aged crews
Another World Adventures welcomes adventurers of all ages to join their tall ship expeditions.
Over the years we’ve advised independent travellers from mature 16 year olds to young-at-heart 86 year olds, because when it comes to travel we like to think that you’re only as old or young as you feel.
We think that having open conversations about health and fitness is a most beneficial way to make sure the right people go on the right voyages.
Young people are welcomed from 15 years old on some youth voyages but when travelling independently 18 is typically the minimum. Depending on the voyage some vessels have no upper age limit, others have a policy of max 73 for offshore. Contact us for more details and we can help you find a voyage that’s right for you.
Mixed age groups are one of the most enriching things about these adventures.
Whether you’re a young professional seeking a break from the routine or a retiree looking for a new and exciting challenge, there’s a place for you on board.
The diverse age range on tall ships fosters a rich exchange of experiences and perspectives, creating a dynamic and inclusive community.
Can I Join Solo: Setting Sail into the Unknown Alone
Absolutely! Yes yes yes!
Joining a tall ship adventure solo is not only possible but encouraged.
Many participants set sail alone and find themselves surrounded by like-minded individuals who quickly become friends.
The communal nature of life on a tall ship makes it easy to form connections, and you’ll soon find yourself part of a close-knit crew, sharing the challenges and triumphs of life at sea.
What Languages On Board: A Melting Pot of Cultures and Languages
The tall ship adventures we feature attract a diverse group of individuals from around the globe. English is typically the primary language on board for the ships we represent, but you’ll find a multicultural crew with a variety of language skills.
The shared language of sailing creates a unique environment where communication goes beyond words, fostering a sense of unity among the crew.
What If I Get Seasick: Navigating any Waves of Nausea
It’s a common concern, but fear not – seasickness is a challenge many sailors face, even seasoned ones.
Tall ship adventures are designed to help you overcome seasickness with a gradual acclimation to life at sea.
The experienced crew will provide tips and tricks to manage seasickness, and as you spend more time on board, your body will adjust to the gentle rocking of the ship.
How Long Can I Join For: Crafting Your Sailing Experience
The duration of your tall ship adventure is flexible, with voyages organized into legs to accommodate varying schedules.
Whether you have a few weeks or a few months to spare, Another World Adventures offers options that suit your availability.
Major port stays are longer, allowing you to explore and ensuring a smooth transition for crew members joining or departing the ship.
Use the website filters to find an option you’re excited about and then make an enquiry and you’ll be connected with the ship and crew office.
Or complete our contact form to set up a call with our team so we can get to the nitty gritty of your ambition and recommend the best voyage for you.
How Far in Advance Do I Have to Book: Securing Your Spot on Deck
Given the popularity of tall ship adventures, it’s advisable to book well in advance to secure your spot on board. The limited space ensures an intimate experience, and popular itineraries can fill up quickly.
Booking in advance not only guarantees your place but also gives you ample time to prepare for the adventure ahead.
The best way to find out about newly released itineraries is through our Newsletter. Voyages are shared there before anywhere else.
Would Tall Ship Sailing Make a Good Sabbatical: Taking a Break from the Ordinary

Whether you’re seeking a break from the corporate world or a hiatus from academic pursuits, a tall ship adventure with Another World Adventures provides the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your mind and spirit.
